Thankstossingontothecouch

This is my Thanksgiving song. I've noticed that, with the tons of Christmas songs in the world, there are maybe three or four Thanksgiving songs out there, the most well-known of which was probably not actually intended to just be played as a seasonal tradition. Even Dr. Demento has to cheat somewhat to round out the Thanksgiving edition of his show. Here, then, is my contribution to the ever so small pool (puddle?) of Thanksgiving songs out there. (Of course, I had to make it a socially conscious song, don't you know.....)

The turkey's smellin' mighty fine
As on this Thanksgiving feast we dine
And the mashed potatoes, looking so good
(Though since they're Aunt Helga's, they probably taste like wood).

Yes, tonight, we eat like kings;
Stuffing, cranberry sauce, and all kinds of things (These last five words to be said l Arlo Guthrie in Alice's Restaurant Massacree)
That lie before us here on this fine eve.
Oops! I got gravy all over my shirt sleeve.

Somewhere beyond these fields of green,
There lies an entirely different scene.
While we bathe here in merriment,
Others feel another sentiment.

Perhaps a loved one has been lost;
Part of a payment of freedom's cost;
Perhaps their life was in another way tossed;
Lain to rest beneath the frost.

For about five minutes, we all make jokes;
Stuffing our faces and drinking our Cokes;
Then half the family goes upstairs
To the big-screen TV to watch the Bears.

Outside somewhere on the lonely streets,
There is no TV, or any special treats.
They'll be lucky to find a thing to eat
With nothing but their clothes and the shoes on their feet.

They try to gain more material possessions,
But "the men" always give them a needless threshin'.
Just another case of social oppresion,
Sinking the people into a pit of depression.

Well, we're thankful for the potatoes, the turkey and the booze,
And the fifteen grand TV (so we can watch the Bears lose)
And the advanced Playstation with 3D killer skiing Donkey Kong,
And the family togetherness, which was about five minutes long.

And we're thankful for the cell phone with all the great features in it
Comes with just about everything ('cept those freakin' anytime minutes!!!!).
And we're thankful that in this lifestyle we can thrive.
Someone, somewhere, thanks the good lord they're alive.

I wish a happy Thanksgiving unto thee,
Or at least a Thanksgiving as happy as it can be.
I hope we'll all soon have peace and prosperity
For all of Earth's children; for you and for me.
