The calendar sports year for 2008 was packed with events and filled with numerous athletic accomplishments by teams and individuals specific to the Sun Gazette's coverage areas in Great Falls, McLean, Oakton and Vienna.

There were numerous high school state, region and district champions, along with other champions during youth summertime sports. The following is a list what the sports staff at the Sun Gazette ranked as the top 25 highlights in 2008 that were reported in our paper.

1. Potomac School Basketball

The Potomac School Panthers (24-7) won the boys Virginia Independent School Division II high school state championship only days after finishing second in their conference.

2. Oakton Football

The Oakton Cougars (13-1) won Concorde District and Northern Region championships, barely lost to the eventual state champion Oscar Smith in the Group AAA semifinals, and won their most games in a season.

3. Oakton Boys Cross Country

The Oakton High School boys cross country team won the Group AAA state championship by placing all seven runners in the top 57. Oakton also won district and region titles in 2008.

4. Oakton Lacrosse

The Oakton High School girls lacrosse team (13-6) won Northern Region and Group AAA state championships. The Oakton boys team was second in the region and state.

5. Flint Hill Football

As the No. 4 seed, the Flint Hill Huskies (8-3) finished second in the Virginia Independent School Division I state high school tournament after upsetting top seed and host Liberty Christian in the semifinals. Flint Hill also won its conference title for the third straight year.

6. Flint Hill Volleyball

The Flint Hill Huskies (31-2) won the girls Virginia Independent School Division I state high school championship for the first time and set a record for the most wins in a season.

7. Potomac School Girls Track

The Potomac School Panthers girls track and field high school team won the Virginia Independent School indoor state title and finished second in the state during the outdoor season. Potomac's Patricia Brant won the indoor 500-meter race, and the indoor 4x400 relay finished first.

8. Potomac School Girls Lacrosse

The Potomac School girls lacrosse team (13-6) won the Virginia Independent School Division II high school state title.

9. Langley Boys Basketball

The Langley High boys basketball team (24-6) recorded its best season by winning the Liberty District, finishing second in the Northern Region, qualified for the Group AAA state tourney for the first time and won its most games in one season.

10. Flint Hill Tennis

The Flint Hill School boys (14-0) and girls (12-2) tennis teams won Virginia Independent School high school state championships.

11. Joe LoRusso

Oakton High School senior Joe LoRusso won the Group AAA state indoor and outdoor championships in the 1,600 meters, was second in the state indoor season in the 1,000 and won Northern Region indoor titles in the 1,000 and 1,600.

12. Babe Ruth All-Stars

The McLean/Great Falls age 13 Babe Ruth all-star baseball team (12-2) won district and state championships and finished second in the Southeast Region tournament.

13. Little League Softball

The McLean Little League age 9-10 girls all-star softball team won the state championship.

14. David Helmer, Langley Wrestling

Langley High School junior wrestler David Helmer won the Group AAA state wrestling championship at 152 pounds. Langley senior Michael Bowman (37-6) was second in the state at 125, as was senior Colin Zoski (38-6) at 135. As a team, Langley finished second in the region, led by individual champions Helmer (41-5), Bowman, Zoski and Anthony Kotoriy.

15. Sean Fletcher

Madison High School swimmer Sean Fletcher won Group AAA state swimming championships in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke. In the summer, he won two races at the Northern Virginia Swimming League's all-star competition.

16. Anneka Wilson

Potomac School junior Anneka Wilson won the Virginia Independent School Division I girls state high school cross country championship, won outdoor state track titles in the 3,200 and 1,600 and finished third in the state in the 800.

17. Brigitte Baker

In her final attempt, Langley High School senior Brigitte Baker won the Virginia High School League's girls state open golf championship in a sudden-death playoff.

18. Jenna Jacoby

Flint Hill School's Jenna Jacoby won Virginia Independent School state swimming titles in the 200 medley and 100 back.

19. Brian Jaeger

Langley High School senior Brian Jaeger won the Northern Region golf championship and helped his team place second in the team standings.

20. Johns Ross

Potomac School senior Johns Ross won the 3,200-meter Virginia Independent School state championship in both the indoor and outdoor high school seasons.

21. Chloe Grishaw

Potomac School's Chloe Grishaw won the Virginia Independent School girls high school diving state title.

22. Madeira Swim and Dive

The Madeira School girls team was second in the Virginia Independent School state swim and dive high school meet.

23. Stephen Serene

Potomac School's Stephen Serene won the 1,000-meter state boys title during the Virginia Independent School indoor track and field championships.

24. John Schnittker

Madison High School senior John Schnittker won the 200-meter freestyle at the Group AAA swim and dive state meet.

25. Langley Doubles Team

The Langley High School girls doubles tennis team of Linden Li and Alyssa Shames won the Northern Region title and finished second in the state.

Honorable Mention

*Langley High seniors Lisa Scott (shot put) and Morgan Danner (pole vault) were first at the Northern Region outdoor track and field meet. Scott also was second in the high jump.

*Helped by a couple of local players, the 10-under Fairfax Stars won a national AAU girls basketball championship.

*Oakton High graduate Eric Cantrell was the first pitcher to throw from the mound at the Washington Nationals' new stadium when he started a college game for George Washington.

*The Oakton High boys swim and dive team finished second in the Northern Region and state meets.

*Flint Hill School senior soccer player John Stertzer scored his 100th career goal during the fall season.

*Cole Oldenburg tossed a perfect game during the McLean Little League majors baseball season.

*In crew, the McLean High School girls senior quad shell was second at the nationals and fourth at Stotesbury.
