Potters Bar Welcomes New President

On Thursday 25th March 2004, at 8.00 pm precisely, TS Forbes saw the installation of its new unit President, Commodore Mike Kimmons. Commdore Kimmons has a distinguished service career going back through the first Gulf War, and also in Kosovo, and including a stint on the Royal Yacht Brittannia, and some time as assistant to the First Sea Lord. His current post is Director of Naval Staff at the Admiralty, a job which among other responsibilities seeks to improve the links between the Royal Navy and the Sea Cadet Corps. Potters Bar unit is delighted to have such an influential person at the helm.

Commodore Kimmons was piped aboard by a guard of honour, inspected the ship's company, and presented service and sporting awards to many of the cadets. He then took an active part on two training sessions, on communications and on the basics of sailing, before evening colours, after which the assembled company retired to the wardroom. The evening was attended by cadets, parents and supporters, and members of the unit management committee.

The installation of Commodore Kimmons is part of a programme of expansion at Potters Bar Sea Cadets. This year sees the introduction of a Junior Cadets section for 10 - 12 year olds, as well as a Marine Cadets detachment. New members are always welcome! 2004 is also the year of a major relaunch for the Sea Cadets movement as a whole.

T S Forbes is one of nearly 400 Sea Cadet units in the UK, and our aims combine the fostering of social responsibility and self-discipline among cadets, with a knowledge of the customs and practices of the Royal Navy, and Britain's maritime heritage. Each unit is run as an independent charity, responsible for its own maintenance and upkeep.
