As an LHS Enivonmental Science class, we do a number of projects during the year. In order to get the students more politically and environmentally aware, we chose to work with the Lebanon Conservation Commission and Students for a Sustainable Future (SSF) to conduct a poster ballot. The goals of the poster ballot project were to get imput from the Lebanon residents on what places in Lebanon should be given priority as open spaces under the Lebanon Master Plan. The project was purely advisory, and will not commit the town boards to aquire any property.
To begin the project, we made a list of open spaces in Lebanon that we thought should be considered, and then organized hikes to those areas. We took pictures of the areas to put on a poster for the project. On Election day, we spent the day at the polls asking people to check off places in Lebanon that they felt should be considered by the Conservation Commission. Voters were allowed to check off as many places as they wanted.
