I am currently in the process of listing the souvenir shops where I have found good bargains for good quality postcards which postcard collectors should check out. You'd be surprised at the difference in prices which can mean that the same postcard you bought for 6 for $1 might be available for 15 for $1 a block down the street.

Barnes & Noble
on Fifth Avenue near the Empire State Building, or over at Union Square

The Empire State Building is on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street.. if my memory serves me right, this particular branch of Barnes & Noble which carries black and white viewcards of New York is at the corner of 37th Street. Mind you, not all branches of this big chain carries postcards, so don't expect postcards in each branch.

Their Union Square branch is many times larger than the floor area of their Fifth Avenue branch near the Empire State Building, but I don't think that that's the reason why they have a wider selection of viewcards -- but they do. Likewise, their branch over at Columbus Avenue also offers a wide selection worth looking into.

inside The Grand Central Station

If you find yourself in The Grand Central Station a few blocks up from the Empire State Building and the Barnes & Noble branch I mentioned above, look for the POSMAN branch there, and they have quite an offering of Artcards, viewcards -- accordion/notebook type sets, bound sets by themes.. I particularly like their stylized postcards which show typical New York sites/scenes and then spruced up with color or some other artistic touch. It's definitely worth looking into!

South Street Seaport Museum Store

Since I started working here on Wall Street in May 2001, I've been trying to find accessible places within walking distance from my office by the water. I have come to discover that the South Street Seaport Museum Store carries a wide variety of colorful postcards sold for 3 for $1, as well as breathtaking black and white photography which go for 75 cents each. For those who are into vintage drawn postcards, these are sold in their store, too.

All you have to do is walk a little farther towards the water and the corner store as you walk into the area where the mall are the racks of postcards. Varieties are from 10 for $2 up to 50 cents or 65 cents each. Good quality and although a little more expensive than usual, they are still not as outrageously overpriced like their counterparts sold in some other parts of downtown. Strand

While this place is more known for the good selection of their second hand books and discount books, Strand actually has several racks of cards which sell for either 5 for $2 or 3 for $2 -- the kind of postcards you don't find off the streets. They also have a wide variety of postcard booklets to choose from ranging from Art topics to everyday scenes in New York.
