As Cain collapses in front of her, Doran calls for the mage and then with a concerned look on her face moves to aid the fallen ranger. Moments later, Shardis joins her with a wad of material for bandages in his hands. Between the two of them, they are able to stop the majority of the bleeding with their temporary bandages.
Still smoking and moving stiffly, Calimar turns about and sees the iron cauldron sitting next to the fire. With painful steps, he goes to it and with a few tentative sniffs, he determines that it is water rather than an orcish repast. With a painful grunt, he tosses off his now-cool armor, revealing his scorched shirt and glimpses of angry red blistering skin. With a ladle by the pot, he starts to pour cool water over his ravaged shoulders and gain a bit of relief.
Leaving Ilph to free the prisoners, Folly comes to Doran's call. As he enters the firepit, Doran stumbles around to Castus and bumps the frozen monk.
Almost instantly, the monk comes alive again, sputtering and cursing, "By Hades plains... I hate that..." Seeing the wounded knight, his anger disappears, "Durian, lad, you're a sight...by the looks of it you shouldn't even be standing." Castus turns to the others, "Where's the Padre? Durian needs his help now."
Folly points to the south, "He's down by the southern wagon."
Castus carefully takes the armored knight into his arms. "Shardis, bring Cain... Folly, tap the others and meet by the wagon."
To the south, Martin sits calmly examining the great tiger now napping near him. Castus appears from the north with the limp form of Durian in his arms. Without a word, the monk sits his cargo next to the priest. In a few moments of examination, Martin sees that Durian is gravely wounded. Motioning for the monk to remove the bolts, Martin gathers his healing agents, behind him, Castus quickly frees the bloodstained bolts.
The others arrive
as the bolts are painfully freed. Martin quickly sets to work closing,
then binding the wounds with healing herbs. (OOC: Hopefully
including the dryad's lichens.) The knight begins to breathe a little
easier, but remains a dead pale white. The monk looks to Father Martin,
but the only answer Martin can give is an uncertain nod.
Castus stands and pulls a metal flask
from his belt pouch, and lifts the wounded knight by the shoulders.
Placing the open flask to Durian's lips, "Now...just a sip, lad."
Durian chokes down the drink with a cough, but as the monk sets him down, some color begins to return and the knight dozes off. Martin begins to nod...Durian will survive.
Turning his attention to the others, Martin checks Doran's work on Cain and only deigns to add some herbs to the bandages for now. It will need some more work later. Then, in turn, he bandages Calimar's burns, Rumil and Doran's arms, and finally Lugnut's head.
With everyone cared for, Castus turns to the others, "Now we need to be off and quick. It's likely that more orcs could come at any time...and we are in no condition to fight. We need to ransack the camp...and find some way to return to the..." Seeing the now conscious captive orcs, "...our camp."
A figure walks from where Ilph is busy at work freeing the prisoners. "I believe I can help you."
Cain recognizes the man as the captured knight, and the squire does likewise. He begins to move towards his master, but the knight waves him off.
"No, stay where you are, Gilles. I release you from your duties to me." He looks at the party. "Perhaps there is a knight here that will take you on.... for I am a knight no more. There was a brother amongst the prisoners and he showed how my desire for vengeance was hubris on my part. I now plan to join him in his order and contemplate my way with the AllFather. In payment to the knight who takes you, I'll leave my armor...I'll keep my sword and shield."
The new monk looks at the party. "As for what I was saying...there is a wagon path to the north of this clearing. The human prisoners are already taking supplies and outfitting one of the wagons. We plan to march the humanoids to Moorward to present them for justice. We will notify them of your deeds and any reward coming to you I will insure reaches you. Now, I must go. Thank you."
The former knight
turns and moves to his new friends and life. As the new monk walks
away, a funny look crosses Castus' face, "Well, at least he had a choice..."
Seeing your interest, Castus immediately breaks into a grin. "Well,
he certainly solved our transportation problem. Lugnut and I will
deal with a wagon...the merchant wagon I think. It'll keep the wounded
out of any possible weather. Doran, Folly -- search the camp for
anything useful that we can take. Rumil, Shardis --ransack the place.
Calimar -- stay with the wounded...and make sure that bloody big cat doesn't
get any funny ideas. Let's get a move on..."
