Place Odds CalculatorThe calculator below uses conditional probability to calculate place odds given a set of win odds.
Note that the odds are in digital notation, where 2.0 means "evens",
3.0 means "2/1", 1.5 means "1/2" and so on.
Note also that the place odds shown are likely to be shorter
than true odds on short-priced runners and longer than true odds on
outsiders. In other words, favoured horses place far less often than the odds
given by this calculator would indicate. I believe one cause of this
is that often if an odds-on favourite doesn't win it's because it has
fallen, not because it has been outrun. Odds-on favourites have a
tendency to either win or come nowhere. This calculator doesn't
(yet) take this into account.
Finally, note that this calculator comes with absolutely no
warranty. The calculations are quite possibly all wrong. If you
find it useful, feel free to use it. If you want to copy the source
code and improve it, please feel free to do so.
