A rebellion against President Vasquez broke out in 1930 in Santiago.Trujillo was ordered to subdue the rebellion. shortly after Trujillo then became the nominee of the newly-formed Dominican Party in the 1930 presidential election. he mad won on may 16th and took office in august 16th at age 37. 3 weeks later San Zenon hurricane hit Santo Domingo and had left more then 3,000 dead with money form teh red cross Trujillo had rebuilt the city .On August 16, 1931, the first anniversary of his inauguration. he made goverment employee to donate 10% of there salary towards to the national treasury. There was a strong pressure to join the dominican party and were required to have a card on them at all times called the "palmita". people who were against his regime were mysterisouly killed.
