Dave Attell at UGA
One of
the nice things about going to a huge school like UGA is that
the school can get pretty famous people to come perform free for
students. Most of the time, they get people that either
suck or suck even harder, but Dave Attell, of Insomniac fame,
recently came and performed his stand-up act for a large group
of students on Legion Field.
The opening act, Sean Rouse, sucked. He just wasn't funny. His voice was grating, and he kept making the sort of jokes that made it seem like he was trying too hard to say what college students would want to hear. Rouse was also really self-deprecating. Now, I hadn't ever seen stand-up live, just on Comedy Central, so I didn't know if it was always this bad, and if I should expect the same from Dave Attell.
Thankfully, Attell kept me (and all of my friends, and everyone else there) in hysterics during his entire hour-and-a-half set. He performed bits about porn, sex, masturbation, drugs, alcohol one of my favorite parts was when he had people in the audience call out what they were planning on drinking that night; Attell would then comment on what that person was going to be doing the rest of the night ("A gin and tonic? For a guy? You're going to go home and cry yourself to sleep watching Sex and the City.") But, the best thing about Attell was that he knew what the crowd wanted to hear, and how to play with the audience. It was thoroughly enjoyable.
If only all stand-up comedians were as funny as Dave Attell.
