Juggernauts are decades-old assualt
vehicles that have played a prominent role in military forces dating back
to the days of the Old Republic. While the Juggernaut was considered state
of the art when it was first developed, modern war vehicles, such as the
AT-AT walkers have displaced it as the most powerful land combat vehicles
in Imperial space.
The vehicle was first built during
the waning days of the Old Republic for use by the many planetary governments
that had begun building their own defence forces. Juggernauts were sold
to planetary governors, corporations, and even private interests, and quite
a few fell into the hands of the Hutt crime clans (and a number of other
shadowy group). Under Imperial rule, most Juggernauts were commandeered
by the Army and proved to be particularly useful on outlying planets where
Imperial commanders could not get AT-AT walkers.
While Juggernauts use ancient technology,
their sheer size and thick armor plating make them as though and dangerous
as the AT-AT walkers. The Juggernaut is twenty-two meters long and nearly
fifteen meters tall. Imperial troops have nicknamed the Juggernauts "rolling
slabs" becuase of thier size and configuration.
Five sets of drive wheels propel the
Juggernaut to a top speed of two hundred kilometers per hour, although
the primitive drive system requires the vehicle to slow to barely twenty-five
kilometers per hour in order to turn. There are two drive stations, on
at each end of the vehicle, so the Juggernaut can simply reverse
direction. This is of great assistance in rough terrain and urban areas,
where there is not enough room for the vehicle to turn around.
Juggernauts can transport fifty troops
into battle or carry speeder bikes, light assualt vehicles, and other small
repulsorcraft. This cargo capacity matches or exceeds that of the Imperial
AT-AT walker, although the Juggernauts terrain limitations and primitive
drive system make the vehicle less attractive in the long run: a Juggernaut
with a damaged drive system can spend weeks in repair bays while crews
wait for replacement parts.
Juggernauts require a crew of two,
with an additional six gunners needed for the weapons systems. A single
trooper in the observation tower provides targeting information to the
gunners. The Juggernaut's weaponry includes a turret-mounted laser cannon
and port and starboard laser cannons. These are as effective as the lasers
on an AT-AT walker, although their older design limits their effective
range to only two-thirds that of the walker's weapons. A medium blaster
cannons is also turret-mounted and features both a longer range and better
stopping power than do the chin mounted medium blasters on the AT-AT. Two
concussion-grenade launchers are mounted on independent turrets, each draw
on a magazine of ten grenades. They are used to lay down suppressing fire
to protect troops exiting a Juggernaut.
