The V1 'Doodlebug'

V-1 (Fi 103) Fieseler. 1942. Surface to Surface Missile (SSM)

Range: 149 Miles (240km) Guidance: Inertial Guidance(Gyoscopic). Propulsion: Pulsejet (Argus Schmidtrohr).

Control: Aerodynamic (Elevater & Rudder only).

Notes: World's first 'Cruise' missile and the first to be used in large numbers.

Wingspan: 16feet Overall length: 25feet. All up weight (including about half a ton of fuel and a one-ton warhead): 2 tons. the original maximum range was increased to 250 miles, so that missiles aimed at London could be launched from sites in Holland. Usually launched from a fixed ground ramp. Later versions adapted for air-drop from modified Heinkel 111 bombers were particularly effective and were in effect, the first true 'Stand-off' missiles

In the period 1944-45 some 10,500 V-1s were aimed at targets in Britain, 8,892 from fixed ground ramps and about 1,600 from aircraft.
