Letter to the People of Maryland on HMOs |
|
![]() |
My Dear Fellow Marylanders, Every day, the papers are filled with horror stories of coverage delayed or denied, and
treatment compromised as patients find I know a woman who went to the same cardiologist for twenty years. But her HMO forced her to go to someone else if she wanted to keep her coverage. A family I know was traveling at Christmas when the husband had a heart attack on the turnpike. The HMO initially didnt want to cover the cost because they didnt get advance authorization before going to the emergency room. Approval for treatment in an emergency room for a heart attack? What is going on here? Have HMOs and their supporters in Annapolis lost all sense of decency? The time has come to say "enough is enough," Government must be willing to step in a protect our people from an industry that sometimes seems more concerned with the bottom line than good health. Over the next few months, I will be seeking information about whats going on with HMOs, and what we can do together to fix the problems. You can help by filling out the questionnaire. Tell me about your own experiences with HMOs. Please also give your recommendations for reforming and humanizing medical care under HMOs. You are the experts. Take a few minutes to let your voice be heard. I am
listening. |
