Walter C. Gochenour, Sparrowbush, New York Walter C. Gochenour, a lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Castle Point Veterans Hospital, Wappingers, N.Y. He was 84. The son of the late Oscar and Lena Childson Gochenour, he was born October 12, 1921 in Sparrowbush, N.Y. Walter was a retired Foreman of the Polishing Department for Crescent Silverplate in Port Jervis; a retired butcher for Grand Union Co. and Markovits Meat Market in Port Jervis; and also the owner of The Copper Corner Antiques in Sparrowbush. He spent 50 years as an active member of Sparrowbush Engine Company, Inc. (1953); past Chief, past President, and past Captain of the Fire Police, Historian and past Fire Commissioner of the Sparrowbush Fire District (15 years); member and historian of the Sparrowbush United Methodist Church; life member of the Orange County Volunteer Fire Police, past President (2 terms) and past Financial Secretary (4 years). He was selected Fire Police of the Year (1981-1982); and had Honorable Mention in 1994 as Fire Police of the Year. He served over ten years on the Firemen Field Day Committee; Orange County Firemen Association; Fire Chief's Association of Orange County, serving on different committees; past Member of the Orange County Fire Advisory Board (12 years); life member of the Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York, past President (2 years) with the title of "Honorable Past President Walter Gochenour Emeritus", past Chairman Board of Directors (3 years), Provisional Director (1 year), Director (2 years); Area 2 Vice President (4 years, from 1977-1981); and at the present was Director at Large, a lifetime position. He was also a member of the State Fire Police Advisory Board and still served as of June 8, 2005; was greatly honored for being selected for Fire Police of the Year in May, 2003 for the Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York; a member of the Hudson Valley Fireman Association, and was selected Fire Police of the Year (1987) for this association, still serving on the Fire Police Committee for 20 years until June 8, 2005. He was a member of the Fire Chief Association of the State of New York; member of the Firemen Association of the State of New York; Pike County Fire Police Association; and State of Pennsylvania Fire Police. Walter was a life member of the 11th Airborne Division during World War II; a life member of the 187th Para/Glider Infantry (187th PGI) during World War II; member of the Rakkassan 187th Regimental Combat Team (187th RCT); Disabled Veterans of America; Commander's Club; member of the Wings of Liberty Museum in Fort Campbell, Ky.; life member of the Port Jervis V.F.W. Post #161; member of the Port Jervis American Legion Post #685; and Charter Member of the Friendly Seniors of Sparrowbush. He was a former Constable and Police Officer of the Town of Deerpark and served on the Committee for the Town of Deerpark Bicentennial, where he was Grand Marshall of the Town of Deerpark Bicentennial Parade in 1998. He was predeceased by his wife, Inez Clark Gochenour. He is survived by two sons, David Gochenour and his wife, Rebecca, of Mohican Lake, N.Y. and Guy Gochenour and his wife, Carol, of Sparrowbush; one sister, Beatrice Becker of Hemstead, N.C.; five grandchildren: David and Lynn Gochenour, Danielle, Dustin and Jeremy Gochenour; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at 1 p.m. in the Sparrowbush United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Mayer officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, N.Y.
