Garvin and Effie Porter's home is tucked into a small valley in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The Porter's have been raising English Shepherds for decades in Pickens, South Carolina. Originally they were used as farm dogs but as the couple has aged they have become beloved companions. Anna Marie and Cyrus Jim are the parents of the latest litter of puppies. Anna Marie went into labor late one April night. All through the next day she delivered one after another. One puppy was stillborn but she delivered 12 puppies into the world. With such a large litter, however, her strength soon ebbed. Late in the afternoon she was rushed to a nearby emergency animal clinic where the vet found that one puppy still remained inside of her. A hysterectomy saved her, and the 5 remaining puppies. Anna was brought home the next day and surprisingly was able to nurse the puppies. Sadly, one of the puppies caught pneumonia and died. April Star is the only female left and is not for sale. Never fear! There are still three strong boys waiting for a loving owner!
