Ghana / Annapurna Region

Testimony

We were very lucky to have Ghana as our guide for a fantastic trek we did in the Annapurnas in January. We did an 8 day trek, flying to Jomson, then walking up to Muktinath and back out to Naya Pul. Ghana knew the region very well, having trekked extensively in the Annapurnas, along with the Everest region and elsewhere. He said the Annapurnas is his favourite area and his enthusiasm for the area really enhanced our trip. We were always happy with his choice of “hotels” in the villages along the way, and the locals usually received him very well. Because of Ghana, we had what I think must be one of the best dahl baths in the whole region in the village of Dana. We were anticipating an encounter with the Maoists around Ghorepani, but that did not eventuate. Nevertheless we would have felt very secure with Ghana negotiating any necessary donations for us. He speaks good English, along with Japanese. He was rarely without a smile, and a good sense of humour, which was always welcome on those tougher parts of the trek. Ghana was unfailingly unhelpful, and even offered to carry my shoes in his pack for a couple of days when my pack started to get a bit heavy. Ghana is studying a business degree at university. In summary, he is very competent and enthusiastic guide, and a lovely warm, friendly, big hearted person. We still keep in touch and I wish him the very best in life. I cannot recommend him highly enough as a guide to enhance your trekking experience in Nepal.

I  have to take this opportunity to make a recommendation for Thakur, who was my guide (and friend) for my last trek to the Everest region. I knew we had found someone special when he swiftly bypassed a frantic crowd to get our small group onto the only flight to Lukla on the day of our departure from KAT. And so it continued for the next three weeks. He employed excellent porters, found us good lodging and food, yet never took away our sense of participation and freedom to choose.
His bright and friendly personality encouraged us when our legs trembled with fatigue, but he never pushed us too far or took risks with our safety. At times I saw glimpses of the knowledge and training he has acquired He watched everyone carefully (porters included) for signs of altitude sickness and injury. We took things slowly and steadily, and therefore went beyond our greatest expectations. The crossing of Cho La was a real highlight!
I feel a little sorry for trekkers who have decided they don't need a guide. They miss out on the real personal experience, friendship - and fun - that traveling with a guy like Thakur gives you.

Testimony

I have been trekking in the Nepal Himalaya a few times, the last time I went trekking around the Langtang region in Spring. My hotel organised a guide for me called Hari. I specifically asked for a guide who had a sunny disposition because the last guide I had caused me a few problems. Anyway Hari was a ray of sunshine! He was always happy, often singing (he could play tunes on a leaf held between his thumbs) and was always attentive, courteous, reliable and trustworthy - not to mention fun to be with. He was knowledgeable about the area and helped teach me a little more Nepali. He was also kind and helpful to the lodge owners and their families, which impressed me, and was very considerate when my partner fell ill. I am going back to Nepal this autumn and have already asked him to be my guide again. I would recommend him to anyone.

Testimony

My husband and I have just returned from the Annapurna circuit trek (Oct 4th - 21st) and I cannot recommend our porter / guide more highly. Sam completely transformed our trip and made it even more enjoyable by having his company. Sam is 24 and has 5 years experience in the annapurna region. He speaks excellent English and is still studying english in his spare time. His knowledge of the region and the trek was excellent and he was always able to answer any questions. He really could not do enough for us and regularly negotiated good prices in guest houses and ensured we stayed in clean good quality places. He also helped out in other situations eg he ensured we passed an area that was the beginning of a landslide safely (we did not know where these areas were) he also helped other trekkers along the way including someone who he looked after and advised to descend when it became apparent he had altitude sickness. Above all Sam was fun and we had a great time chatting with him in the day and socialising and playing cards in the evening. He works hard to support his family wife , 2 children (4 yrs and 6 months) and his parents who live with him. I would recommend him highly to any trekkers visiting Nepal. He can be contacted on [email protected] .

Hello! I am an educator from northern Minnesota in the US of A. who just completed a 17 day loop trek to Everest base camp with Kul Prasad Subedi who goes by the nickname of KP. I want any one who is considering a trek to consider KP as their guide as he not only is very knowledgeable in the culture, people, customs, flora, fauna, mountains, and anything else one would want to know about Nepal, but also has a GREAT sense of humor! He will make you laugh along the trekking trail! I had an absolutely awesome time and 95% of this is directly attributable to having KP as my professional guide. KP watches out for your safety and checks in just the right amount to see how you are doing as you complete the trek. He is a true gentleman. I appreciated being able to trek at my own pace as I was coming from flat MN at 1500 feet .. He not only has professionalism in dealing with any safety factors along the way, but makes sure you are comfortable both physically and psychologically and so I highly recommend KP. Not only was he a guide extraordinaire , but he lined up an opportunity for me to connect with a school in his home area so that we might become sister schools with the school on a Native American reservation where I teach. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or [email protected]

Namaste!

My name is Mikael Persson from Sweden. During the past 20 years I’ve visited Nepal nine times, yes you are right, this is my favorite country! I have been here for many reasons, for writing articles, bird watching, visiting Nepali friends and of course trekking. The trekking has always been brilliant experiences, mainly thanks to a very knowledgeable and polite guide Ram (Kamal) Sapkota, who, since more than ten years back, become one of my closest friends. We have been trekking together to remote chepang villages (a kind of "stone age" people), Panch Pokhari (Lang Tang Region), Annapurna, and more obscure areas outside normal maps and tourist destinations. Two years ago we went to Api Himal in far western Nepal, an extremely remote and beautiful area with very interesting ethnic diversity. This was very much possible due to Rams (Kamals) knowledge.

Ram (Kamal) Sapkota has a huge experience in trekking. Besides this, he has a great knowledge in nepali culture, history and politics (from university studies) and wildlife and nature from guiding many Scandinavian groups through the Nepali mountains.

I use to recommend him to all my friends. Everyone has been so pleased with all his arrangements. Ram is gentle, easygoing and full of respect for his owns country and culture. He is 100 % honest and trustful, he never drinks alcohol (which could be a bonus for single woman traveling alone.

I would congratulate anyone fortunate enough to go trekking with Ram (Kamal) Sapkota.

Besides everything above, his pricelist is extremely reasonable. He can arrange all kind of treks in Nepal plus trips to his beautiful, native home village Jyamrong (and a rare opportunity to stay for a few days in a Nepali home).

UPDATE: May 2004

Hi , Just got back from trekking ABC with Ram Sapkota, whom I found through your site. He is an excellent guide with a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of his country that made our experience very special. we also had 2 great porters Gyanundra and Ram who took wonderful care of our belongings and made sure we didn't lose anything. Can you please add my name as a reference for Ram Sapkota on your site. Regards, Anita Taylor, Australia Anita Taylor.

In previous four years, I visited Nepal almost every year with Dambar Adhikari (Shiva). Now, after many journeys, for me, he is not only a trekking guide but also my very good friend. Here, I really want to highly recommend him ([email protected], [email protected]) to all people who love to visit this country. As long time communication with him, I fully understand his personality and very confident that he is an excellent trekking guide. He is honest, mature and very considerable trekking guide. He has been a guide for almost 9 years and has extensive knowledge of all trekking routes. The most impressive thing for me is that he loves his country and is willing to help every one. I remembered that several times when his porters got problems during trekking. He gave helps to them without any hesitation. He helped them to carry stuff and minimized the influence on tourists. Due to his extensive knowledge of trekking, he can definitely provide a reliable and tailor-made service to tourists. Besides trekking, he has visited different parts of Nepal which including some remote and less-popular tourist areas, such as the far west. Testimony

I have trekked with Shital Chandra Dharel three times for a total of 30 days. Shital has eight years experience guiding and portering, and is extremely professional, safety conscious and extremely well respected along all the routes we took by other guides and porters, hotel owners, and trekkers alike. He is 100% trustworthy, honest, and humble. He is also funny, a good card player, very flexible about the schedule, and you won't have to worry about one thing when you're with him. I was very sick one day, and without him, I would still be on the mountain. He made sure I ate, drank plenty of water, literally talked me through, kept me laughing, and once there, looked out for me every minute until I felt better. I would never go trekking with anyone but him. I like to trek with just a guide. I am an American single woman. With Shital I feel like I am with my brother. I recommend him highly. I trust him explicity. Go with the best, go with Shital. You will meet one of Nepal's guides, and have a friend for the rest of your life.

My wife and I - 52 years old and from Denmark - have been on a 12 days trek with a fantastic guide, Ram. A trek from Pokhara to Muktinath and back in march/april 2003. Ram is 34 years old, he is living in Pokhara with his wife, a daughter 4½ years and a new borne son. Ram has been a guide for more than 10 years and he knows everything about the AnnaPurna area. Ram is very good in the English language, he is very responsible, he takes care of everything. You get an answer on all your questions. He tells about the people, you meet on the trip, all about him self, his family, his and other religions, about buddhists, Hindus etc about the birds, animals, flowers. He gives all information, that we cannot find in the guidebooks. He is very careful of your safety on the trek, and of course he is a very honest man. Every afternoon he found a nice and cheap place to stay for the night. We met Ram at our hotel in Pokhara (Hotel Mountain Villa - e-mail: ([email protected]), where we made the deal about the trek.

Jagat / Annapurna Region

Email Jagat

Testimony

During the trek itself he took the lead in his quiet, unassuming manner, observing my physical abilities and adjusting the pace accordingly, never making me feel uncomfortable for my slow ascents on steep climbs. Instead, he encouraged me to find my groove and stick to it, so that even the hardest hikes were a joy. His itinerary was perfect; a good balance of walking and rest stops, and he chose lovely places for the night halts, never the sleekest ones, but inexpensive places with lots of charm and hospitality. It was very cold during this pre-season, and every night we found ourselves sitting by the kitchen fire, chatting with the proprietresses and eating delicious Dal Bhats.

Once we encountered a festival in a Gurung village along the way and decided to stay, adjusting our plans accordingly to enjoy an afternoon of singing and dancing. Jagat is everything I could have wished for in a guide. He is professional, respectful, courteous, kind, and knowledgeable, has a subtle sense of humor and is a great travel companion. We had wonderful conversations along the way, as well as long stretches of comfortable silence. His second profession as a singer is an added bonus because on many occasions he lent his voice to an entertaining evening by the fire.

He taught me many Nepali words and phrases and gave me a great introduction to the various cultures we encountered along the way. Already halfway into our trek I decided to return in April to tackle the Anapurna circuit with him. His prices are very reasonable, and in fact, he decided to work independently to avoid exploitation of both client and guide by agencies. He renews his license every five years after undergoing additional training.

I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Better yet, you can contact Jagat at left.

I have employed Santaman  as a guide for three of my four trips to Nepal. I found him to be excellent professionally as well as a great person to be with on an adventure holiday. Santaman is 100% reliable, very knowledgeable and skilful as a guide, a very good communicator and an intuitive listener.

I have witnessed him making decisions under pressure (my 10 year old son got an acute case of Altitude Sickness on one of our treks in the Everest Region), and found him to be a good and quick thinker and a very good decision maker. He will trying everything to accommodate your needs and wants during the trek, but will be quite assertive and firm if there is a situation where safety is an issue. He seem to have a pool of very good porters that he works with, and treats them well.

Santaman is 28 years old, is married and has two daughters, aged 7 and 5 years. He is studying sociology part time at Tribhuvan University, as well as going to his village during the monsoon months to help his parents with the farming. I would very much want to recommend Bhadra Shrestha as a porter/guide for trekking trips. I've just been on a great 4-day trek with him around pokhara. He seems to know many of the locals, and often we'd be invited into peoples homes for chai or even a meal, and he would translate for me.

Through 9 years of trekking experience - he is now 26 - he has attained both a good knowledge of the local environment as well as a helpful understanding of us difficult westerners. I met him one evening on the street at lakeside, where he introduced himself. At first it is always hard to trust people, but he took me to him home and I met his sweet wife and son, and I began to see what a good guy Bhadra is.

The 4-day trek only proved to me his trust-worthiness, and his good nature in caring for the people we met. Bhadra has not only been an interesting guide to me, but also a good friend.

He not only treats and care for us, his clients but he also extends his warmth and generosity towards his porters and the people along the guest houses.
Lastly, what I would like to say, this is our best decision to have a trekking trip in Nepal to admire the beauty of Annapurna region and to meet prem such nice and wonderful person.

October 2003 my wife and I walked from Besisahar to Manang and back. KB, the nick name for Krishna Gurung was our guide on this trekking. Although KB is very young (and we are relatively old) he proved to be an excellent guide for us. He managed the English language very well, had a good sense of humor and was very careing for us. There was no doubt, he knew the Annapurna region very well and was well known in all the lodges we used. As I developed a knee problem (that's why we did not go further than Manang), he hired Rames in Khudi in order to reduce the weight I had to carry. The four of us had lot's of fun during the trip.  If you want to have a pleasant trekking with a very knowledgeable guide, you should try to get K.B. Gurung from Pokhara.

My wife and I visited Nepal in Nov 2002 where we trekked to ABC with a porter-guide, Tika Ram. He was recommended to us by one of the guides listed on the Independent Porters and Guides website. We managed to locate this young Nepali man of 30 in Pokhara quite easily as many of the locals there seemed to know him. He was happy to get a job at these tough times and not having to share his hard-earned money with some middle-man.

On the trail Tika tried to point out, in reasonably good English, the interesting plants and animals, local activities and practices, as well as scenic views and noteworthy sights. Also, when the going got tough he would crack a joke or two to soothe our aches. It was enjoyable and a pleasure to trek with him.

We were fortunate to find a good and reliable guide. If you are thinking of getting one, do consider Tika Ram. His e-mail address is [email protected]. For more information about him, please e-mail us at [email protected].

We would appreciate it if you would post the above information on your Independent Porters and Guides website so that other trekkers can also benefit from Tika's excellent services.

Testimony

I've trekked most year's in Nepal since 1990 - usually without a guide. I met Jonson (who has been a full time guide since he was a teenager) while trekking around Annapurna in 1997. During that trek I befriended a Danish trekker called Ivan, and Jonson was guiding him. Ivan had used Jonson for several years (and still does) and as I traveled with them, I could see why. Jonson was very courteous, attentive, and knowledgeable, and although I wasn't his employer he simply acted as though I was - arranging accommodation and food, explaining things and identifying mountains etc. During the two weeks I traveled with them, he helped make the trek a very enjoyable experience. We subsequently kept in touch and I visited him and his family each time I was in Nepal.

During May this year (2002) I wanted to trek in the Annapurna region again, but felt a little apprehensive about the Maoist situation. As a precaution I took Jonson with me and once again he made the trekking even more enjoyable. I'm going again this year will be taking him with me (assuming he's free). I now know that although trekking in Nepal is fairly easy without a guide, having a good one with you makes a considerable difference to the level of enjoyment you get.

Jonson is honest and reliable, and as I've said, courteous and knowledgeable. I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone thinking of trekking in any of the regions of Nepal - at one time or another Jonson has trekked them all.

Hello from Belgium!!

I have been in Nepal with my friends for 3 times in 1996, 1998 & 2000. We did a trek to Annapurna Region two times & Gokyo in Everest region with guide Hari. During our trekking period and time in Nepal he did everything what we needed for travelling in Nepal. He is very honest, helpful, reliable, friendly, well-educated and a well trained guide. He has been trained by the Ministry of Tourism of Nepal, and became a trekking guide license in 1993. He has graduated in history and in English literature. He has been attended the classes about high altitude sickness, first aid training. Hari has got great knowledge in history of Nepal, culture, life style, altitude sickness and makes the right decisions in case of emergency, bad weather or sickness. As we experienced in 1996 at the Annapurna trek where Hari successfully succeeded to arrange a helicopter in very difficult circumstances to rescue a very sick friend. For this we are still very grateful.

Of course he did help us with plane tickets, permits and for all other necessary things. He speaks fluent English as well as Japanese. I found Hari a real professional trekking guide.

I have already recommended Hari to many people in Belgium and also to many of my friends and they all enjoyed him a lot and liked his professional work. My wife and I are planning to do the Mustang Trekking in the end of 2003 of course with Hari.

He has more than 10 years experience and has trekked the Annapurna circuit, Lantang area and Everest base camp many times.  He is a very nice guy and I strongly recommend him.

Dear interested travelers,
If you are going to travel to Nepal or Tibet and interested to do trekking in the Himalayas, I would highly recommend Tilak Thapa Magar. He has been a guide for over a decade in Nepal and Tibet’s Himalayas. He is a quite  young guy, age of 28. Tilak has been my guide all four times that I have visited Nepal, so you can imagine that I am quite pleased with him.
My guide (Tilak) has been terrific.  His English is always excellent and he knows so much about all aspects of his country that he makes the trek very interesting and informative.  I have heard such charming stories on my treks about the Nepali history and culture.
I think the knowledge of the guide and the care that he uses to look after my safely, are most important to me. All my needs are seen to. He is always so courteous and friendly. I can truthfully think of nothing that would have enhanced my visits other than having more time to spend in Nepal.
I hope you choose Tilak for your memorable holidays to Nepal and Tibet.  I know he will help you have a wonderful holidays.  Please email me if you have more questions. All the best.
Sincerely,
Dr. Paula Miller

I completed the Annapurna Circuit trek with my son on 15/4/2002. The trek itself was fantastic and the input of our porter/guide added greatly to the experience. He is a young man from the Ghorka region with good English and in depth knowledge of Nepalese culture. we found him to be extremely helpful and with his sense of humour was a great travelling companion. We had been considering doing the trek without a guide and are glad that we eventually decided to engage a guide/porter.

Deepak Dhamala  / Annapurna Region

Testimony

It is my pleasure to recommend the "best damn guide" in the Himalays!!!

I trekked the Annapurna Circuit in November 2000 with Deepak Dhamala. I worked in a school as a volunteer for a few months afterward producing educational teaching aides. Throughout my stay in Nepal, and beyond, Deepak has been the best friend imaginable. It was my pleasure to be at his wedding last May and I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of he and his wife's first baby.
I would not hestiate to recommend Deepak as a trekking guide to anyone. He is very well educated, his english is great, as a guide he is very client focused, and perhaps most importantly of all, he has a wicked sense of humor which certainly helps while away the long dark evenings at the end of a trekking day. He is certified by the Trekking and Tourism authority (or whatever government dept it is that issues the certified trekking licenses)

Mahesh Khadka / Pokhara Region & Annapurna Region

 [email protected] Testimony

Hi from Seattle,

I have been to Nepal 4 times and have used the same guide for each of my treks (actually he was working as a porter the first time I met him in September 2000 and will do either job). His name is Mahesh Khadka and he is a 22-year old man originally from Sarangkot; he has lived in Pokhara for the last five years. Mahesh has worked independently and also for two trekking companies in Pokhara, accepting work from all possible referral (fewer tourists over the last year, so work from any source is important!). I would love to see him receive more business, especially now, with fewer tourists coming to Nepal.  He works hard and helps support his parents and five younger sisters.

He is honest, reliable, and fun to be with, and I recommend him heartily. His experience is in the Annapurna region and he is familiar with all the treks in that region. He has not yet done the Everest Base Camp trek, but would love to do it, if the opportunity presents itself. He can arrange to meet people either in Kathmandu or Pokhara. His e-mail address is: [email protected].  He speaks English well and can respond to any e-mail inquiries.

Trekking is such a wonderful experience and is even better when you have a great guide!!

Ang Nima Sherpa / Everest Region & Annapurna Region

Mail Nima

Testimony
We have employed Ang Nima as our guide for our past two trips to Nepal.  He was our guide for the Everest Base Camp Trek in Nov 01 and for the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary in April-May 02.  He is an extremely experienced guide with 27 years of service throughout the country with Tiger Mountain, the top trekking outfit in Nepal, where he was a Sirdar (the lead guide for large trekking groups and expeditions). He is now an independent guide and his contacts and experience are invaluable.  He is extremely safety conscious and ensures that the pace of the trek is compatible with your ability.  He also ensures you acclimatize as you trek to higher elevations.  He is a Sherpa farmer that lives in Kunde, next to Namche Bazaar in the Everest Region.  His daughter is his point of contact and the head nurse at the Kunde Hospital which is a valuable resource enroute to Base Camp.  He is a superb guide, extremely knowledgeable and will take care of all your trekking needs.  Feel free to contact him via his daughter at the contact link.  I will be glad to take any of your e-mail questions at [email protected].

KB (Khar Baha Dur B.K) / Pokhara

[email protected]

Testimony
KB is an experienced, friendly and professional porter with an excellent knowledge of the Annapurna area. His attention to detail in including you in the country as you pas through includes information that you just won't find in guide books. He is fluent in English and also knows quite a few phrases in other main languages through his years of being a porter for folks from every corner of the earth. He is a caring and responsible family man, living with his wife and three children in Pokhara - the starting point for most treks, especially the Annapurna, which is a spectacular area to walk and well worth the effort. You may have a lot of questions about what trek is right for you or more importantly, if a porter is right for you. Feel free to email KB with these questions or to arrange a meeting when you get to Nepal. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending KB to you and will happily take any email questions you might have. at [email protected] or via my Nepal - India page of Three Months in the Boonies : http://www.sci.net.au/userpages/thewold/

Laxman Guruwacharya / 28 / Kathmandu

[email protected]

Testimony
I have been on 2 treks with the same guide, who has now became my friend--Laxman Guruwacharya, 28 years of age, living in Kathmandu. He had 6/7 years of trekking experience around Annapurna and Langtang (I have been to the ABC in Anna and Gosainkund in Langtang with him) and he is now familiarising himself in Everest region (gokyo route). With his years of trekking experience, he has a good network of the people in the above mentioned regions. He was my porter/guide in fact when I did the 2 treks with him. With a good command of English (in Nepalese standard) and some knowledge of the Western cultures, I could converse with him and exchange opinions of anything under the sun.  Unlike some Nepalese guides whom I've noticed during my treks, he wasn't a person to be eager to please his clients but he does his job and this makes him personal on the other hand, thus able to build up a friendship instead of a sheer transaction relationship with him.
