| In my humble opinion, season 3 is when the show begins to get really, really good. The characters evolve and mature, as does the humor. Eric gets a little stupider, Cory acts like an old man a little more, Feeny becomes a bit more human. Slowly, the show is working its way into it's best years. The influx of characters in season 3 isn't as limited as it was in season 2. We only meet one new returning character, and that is Eli Williams, Turner's best buddy and the new media arts teacher at John Adams High. As a teacher, he seems much more approachable than either Feeny or Turner. And even though he is a teacher at the school, his main role is to serve as Turner's best friend, and someone to make a plot with when Cory and Shawn aren't interacting with Turner. As for the story arcs, the main one is Cory and Topanga. In the season premeire ("My Best Friend's Girl"), it takes a scheme by Shawn to finally put the two together. All is good, as they survive an "I love you" bump in "What I Meant to Say" and continue strong until they hit a snag in "The Grass is Always Greener." They break up, for some reason or another, and remain separate until Cory decided he wants her back and chases her down in "The Happiest Show on Earth." Shawn is also given some serious plots. His friendship with Turner is strained and helped by their living situation. They struggle, have arguments (in "The Double Lie") and ultimately strengthen their friendship by resolving said problems. In the end, though, Shawn needs his father, who finally returns home to care for Shawn in "I Never Sang for my Legal Guardian." The biggest element added to the third season is the use of Eric as a main character instead of a secondary character. He tries and tries to get into college without success througout the year. He gets an internship at a local newstation, and fufills his dream as being the weatherman. But has to quit, as he cannot do that and complete high school (in "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" and "Stormy Weather"). Also, his poor relationship with Cory is finally recognized in "Brother-Brother." Best Season Episode: "The Happiest Show on Earth" |
