At least the match was close. That was probably the only thing that
would console Dragon fans as they left Champions Heaven Stadium yesterday,
depressed once again that their heroes lost another match, this one a
critical one against the Magna Carta Crusaders. More worrisome
however is how they will respond after the loss of two of their starters
to injury during the match.
'Not good', was all coach Keith Wright would state after the match in response to how he was doing and how his team was doing. The Magna Carta Crusaders, now just two points behind the Dragons for eight spot, the last spot to avoid relegation, played their hearts out especially in the second half, with them scoring the winning converted try with less than 15 minutes remaining in the match to squeak out a 22-20 victory on a rain soaked field. The Dragons, who had at one point a 20-7 lead, just after half, seemed to buckle when two of their starters, prop Greg Hutson and 8-Man Owen Clarke went down with injuries in the early stages of the second half. 'The pack just cracked after that', noted one visibly upset Dragons fan after the match. The Crusaders, with a new lease on life in the match, pounded the Dragons with everything they had and were finally able to crack the now unsteady Dragons pack. Though a shame that the Dragons had to lose in such a way they have been fighting the injury bug all season with over half their starters not playing 100% so this sort of this was bound to happen. Now as they prepare for the last quarter of the season any Dragon fan has to look at their schedule and worry. The Dragons have for certain the tougher schedule with only one relatively easy opponent in the Workers Point Bobcats. The Crusaders meanwhile have the Bobcats and the last place Locke Harbour Blues. Meaning that if everything goes according to prediction the Dragons should be eliminated at season's end. Meaning that they had better start playing with additional resolve if they hope to be in tier 1 come next season. |
No amount of yelling has helped the Dragons this season. |
