NEW SPAN CONNECTING LOCKE HARBOUR EAST ISLAND OPENS.

Over a decade in the making, bridge finally connects the island..

PFT News, Locke Harbour

The Prime Minister, and both Mayors were on hand to cut the ribbon to open the bridge this morning at 7am.

Costing over 380 million to build, the bridge took over a decade to build, partially because of all the political rankling about everything from the exact location, to environmental protests.

The bridge opening however was a much guarded secret and only the media were on had for the ribbon cutting ceremony this morning.  'We want this bridge open for rush hour traffic as soon as possible, citizens of Locke Harbour East have waited long enough for it', noted the Prime Minister in response to questioning on why the ribbon cutting was done so early in the morning with next to no advance warning.

A spokesperson from  the Locke Harbour East transportation department noted that, 'this bridge should help to alleviate the strain on the ferries and the surrounding roads around the ferry terminal on the island.'

Linking the southwest part of the island with the south shore, the bridge is expected to be heavily traveled during the initial first month.

'It will be busy, but within the next month a shorter span connecting the west side of the island eastwards towards the city should be completed', noted Greater Locke Harbour mayor Birt Hobart.

'Ferry service will continue from the island to the mainland despite the bridge, though our business will primarily be running customers to other islands now', as spokesperson for the island ferry service noted.
