With the Rugby International Tournament in full swing it was the perfect opportunity to launch 2 new franchises for the supreme rugby league in the region. 'Camelot and Magna Carta are to join the league in 2006', stated a spokesperson for the Board of Directors of the PopularFreedom Rugby League (PRL) at a news conference today. Though Magna Carta was expected to join sometime soon, the addition of Camelot came as a surprise to some. Most Locke Harbour fans we talked to on the street seemed shocked at the choice of Camelot to host a franchise. ________________________________________ '...how empty is that stadium gonna look when it can hold over half the town....' -fan reaction to Camelot being granted a team. ________________________________________ 'I'm happy for them but how empty is that stadium gonna look when it can hold over half the town', noted one fan. Rumour has it that politics may have been involved in the decision. Popular sports commentator Jim Wilson noted that, 'Magna Carta has been long overdue, but Camelot isn't even a city officially no matter what the government says'. Sacredicity mayor Gavin Newsom was even more blunt in a phone conversation where he noted that, 'the Prime Minister is doing everything he can to make this town look to be a city. They get an international airport, a sports franchise in the premier sports league in the nation, makes absolutely no economic sense.' James Collins, political reporter for this paper, when interviewed on the issue pointed out that, 'the town of Camelot will most likely grow steadily once the airport is open however this is definitely the government pushing forth their own agenda in relation to Camelot getting this franchise.' Time will definitely reveal the truth of the matter. In the history of the PRL it has only expanded once after it was first formed prior to the 1984 season. It has also had one franchise fold, the Victory Union Cowboys, though that was for political reasons more than anything else. 'We look to the tradition the Pearson Pirates have set as a great expansion team and trust that these 2 teams will react in the same way', noted the board of directors. Sports reporter, Natalie Rezziqula, summed it up best as she noted that, 'Magna Carta was long overdue as a PRL team and should be a success, however only time can reveal the true fate of the Camelot team.' |
