EXPLOSION AT POWER PLANT IN LOCKE HARBOUR KILLS 5.

Massive fire engulfs plant, areas of city left in darkness for hours.

Report by: Mike Stafford
PFT News, Locke Harbour

A massive explosion at one of the four coal burning power plants in Locke Harbour Southeast killed 5 firefighters yesterday afternoon.  With the resulting fire shutting down two of the four coal burning power plants and plunging half the city into darkness.

'One un-used area in plant number 3 caught on fire and it spread to the rest of the facility, we had to shut down plant number 2 which is right beside it as a precautionary measure', noted a representative of the Locke Harbour power company.  'Unfortunately due to the fire both plants were shut down and we have no idea at this time when power to them would be restored.  We plan to purchase power from Locke Harbour East as soon as we can to restore power'.

As of this morning however power had yet to be restored to most effected areas of the city.

The fire department and police department were still investigating the fire this morning as well as coming to grips with the loss of 5 colleagues.

'This is an extremely sad day', noted one firefighter.  Another noted that he was right besides one of the firefighters who died when, 'all I saw was this massive fireball and thought I gotta get outta here.  The backdraft killed the firefighter I was with, I saw him caught by it and there was nothing I could do'.

Locke Harbour Southeast mayor Gina Spiker noted that, 'we are saddened by the loss of life and our prayers go out to the families of those who died.'  Greater Locke Harbour mayor Birt Hobart as well expressed his condolences to those who died.

Political reporter James Collins noted that in light of this being the second major fire in less than a week in the supercity that, 'firefighters will probably be lobbying even harder now  to get a water bomber though that will wait until the mourning period is over'.

Numerous city blocks in the southeast section of Greater Locke Harbour were in darkness for most of the night.
