A huge section of the industrial development on the east side of Locke Harbour East was in a twisted mess this morning as firefighters combed the wreckage looking for hotspots. The 3 alarm blaze broke around 11pm last night. Within minutes 2 other fire divisions were called in to help. Initially the fire was only in one building but constant flare ups due to numerous chemicals in the plants help to spread the fire rapidly. ________________________________________ '...every time we thought we had the fire under control it would flare up again...' -Lisa McCormick, Locke Harbour Fire Department. ________________________________________ This fire comes just as city council was to debate a bill this week about purchasing a water bomber aircraft to fight fires with. Firefighters on the scene seemed to be supportive of that idea after the fire. 'Sure would have helped us with this fire', stated one firefighter. Lisa McCormick, another firefighter noted that, 'definitely we could have used a water bomber, every time we thought we had the fire under control it would flare up again'. Our political correspondent, James Collins, noted that this would make the debate at city hall on purchasing a water bomber, 'a heated one'. |
