"Oklahoma" Index
Synopsis Continued
After Judd sings his song, Laurie talks with the girls. They ask about her choice to go with Judd instead of Curly. They sing a song "Out of your dreams" where she drinks the Elixir of Life. That starts a sequence that was made famous in this play (the dream ballet). Curly and Laurie start to dance (in Neshaminy's version, dream curly played Curly on a different night while dream laurie was played by two different girls who are similar looking to the people who played Laurie on that given night). The whole dream goes around Laurie marrying Curly and everything's peaceful until Judd breaks up the wedding and the scene changes. The girls from the postcards on Judd's walls come alive and dance. After they finish, everyone comes back and watches Curly and Judd exchanging blows. Judd finally strangles Curly to death and takes Laurie away. When she wakes up, Judd ask if she's ready, and Curly sees them walk off, ending Act 1.
Act 2 begins with the hoe-down of the box social, where Carnes and Aunt Eller start singing about how "the farmer and the cowman" should be friends. After the dance stops and the auction starts, Will talks to Ali about how he wants to marry Ado Annie. Ali wonders that if Will had $50 in cash, if Will would get her and Ali would lose her. He offers to buy things in his bag, from a french hot water bottle ($8), a night gown ($22.50), and an ankle braclet ($15), which adds up to $45.50. Laurie shows up and Judd soon follows. At this point, Will has his "little wonder" out. (When he showed it to his friends, it was a kaledioscope that shows the picture of a "naked-girl" inside, and Judd asks Ali if he had one, since it has a knife on a spring). Judd wants it and Will figures it to be $3.50, thinking that adds to $50, but as Ali puts it "NO! One dollar short!" He buys the rest in his bag for $1, starting the auction. Ado Annie's lunch hamper is up to bid on. Will offers his $50, but Carnes says that if he bids on it, he can't keep his money. Ali bets $51, giving Ado Annie back to Will.
Laurie's hamper is the last one up for auction and when someone bets on it, Judd adds "and 2 bits". Curly disappears for a bit, trying to find something to sell for money. He comes back with a saddle, which he gets $10 for, Judd tops him with 2 bits. Curly sells his horse "old blue" for $25, and wins the auction.
Judd tries to get Curly to look at the "little wonder" but Ali warns Aunt Eller, which stops Judd just in time. When Judd and Laurie return from the party, he says that he loves her, but she's afraid of him. He gets mad, thinking that he's not good enough for her. She then fires him and it scared to death. Will comes by looking for Ado Annie and Laurie asks him to tell Curly that she wants to see him. He's right behind her and she runs to him. He's a bit overhelmed at first when Laurie's crying on him and wants to kiss him. He separates them and then sits on the stove, a bit jumpy at first, until he finds that it's cold. He promises to keep Laurie safe from Judd and wonders out loud if she'd marry him. She accepts. Everyone gathers together to sing how "Oklahoma" will become a state of the union. Judd comes by, unexpectedly and attacks Curly with a knife, which he defends, but Judd falls on his own knife.
There's a small trial about this, but Curly explains that it was a count of self-defense, so he goes free. Ado Annie and Will come back, covered in hay, while Ali Hakim ended up marrying Girty. The play ends with the same song it begins with, "What a beautiful morning". Curly and Laurie drive away in their surrey with the fringe on the top.
