Holy item potency and durability
I found myself needing a system to reflect the power of holy items in relation to the amount of time,and environment they would be created in.I am leaving this some what loose so it can be adapted for other games and maybe even other systems.I used a simple twelve point scale that reflects different ways of creating holy items.
Levels 1-2 are emergency blessings,levels 3-6 are field blessings,levels 7-9 are temple blessings,levels 10-12 are artifacts.
Level 1-The item remains enchanted for 2 days at most.It must be stored in a container that is more durably blessed or lose it�s charge in a matter of hours.it expends it�s charge upon contact with an unholy surface.It will do 20-30 percent less to creatures affected by holy items then those blessed more thoroughly. Level one items are created in two ways.The most common is by a minor representative of a faith without expending ppe,just a simple rite for about 1-2 minutes.The second way is to had the item in contact with a greater artifact.also the �blessing charge� at this level is very sensitive, if the item is used by an individual of a contradictory faith it will fail to function,or if the user has been taking actions contrary to to the doctrine of the blesser�s faith.the creation time can be cut in half of the blessing is being performed in a holy place
Level 2-as level one ,but damage is only 10 percent less,and the item will retain it�s �charge� if correctly stored for up to 3 days.a level 2 item is created by performing a more involved ritual of 3-5 minutes,or extending the contact time with a holy artifact.
Level 3-as previous levels,but a level 3 blessing will last a week to three weeks depending upon how much of that time it is stored in a container with a higher blessing level.my be used by people of all faiths provided there are no major contradictions,or curses placed on the individual by a member of the blesser�s faith.a common level of blessing for holy water.the blessing for a level three item requires a expenditure of psychic energy.the rite is only slightly different from a level two blessing,but needs to be done on sanctified ground.a ritual of purity that takes anywhere from 1 hour to weeks ,or never depending upon the condition of the area to begin with.average time is about three hours for areas that have had no unholy presences or acts within 6 months or so depending upon the original level of unholiness.the purity rite lasts for a day baring further rituals or blasphemy
Level 4-as above,but twice as durable. The basic blessing takes 7 minutes per item psychic energy cost is 20 percent more .
Level 5-Additionally level five items can survive a second contact with an unholy surface. longevity is increased by 25 percent.blessing time is increased by 20 percent as is psychic energy.
Level 6-A third contact with an unholy surface can be made with before the charge is negated.longevity is also increased by another 25 percent.production time,and psychic energy are only increased by 15 percent.
Level 7-the blessing must be performed on sanctified ground.witch starts with the purity rite,but also includes the construction of a building with blessed and prepared materials to make a church or temple.a level seven item can withstand unlimited contacts with unholy surfaces,but will needed to be purified every 7 months with a second blessing.the second blessing has an 80 percent success rate that decreases 20 percent each blessing there after,until it is corrupted.production time remains unchanged
Level 8-a level eight blessing will remain until an act of profound contradiction to the blesser�s faith is done.it will only need to be recharged after extreme contact with the unholy.final casting time remains unchanged,but great attention must be placed on the material selection and handling.if the item is contaminated during the process it cannot be used.the minimum time it takes to create a level eight item from scratch is a week if the process is rushed.It is seldom rushed.
Level 9-level nine items require multiple blessings during the creation process by several priests.all tools used in the creation of the item must be blessed,as well as all surfaces the item comes into contact with during it�s creation.A blessing of each level must be placed on the item.It�s enchantments cannot be removed except by a deliberate attempt to corrupt it involving rituals in an unholy site.It may ,however fail to work for people who regularly violate the doctrine of the blessing deity,only to work for the next user.minimum creation time is 2 weeks
Level 10-the item exudes a potent aura,and is often detected from great distances by it�s targets if it is uncovered.A level ten item may have it�s blessing removed,but it will shatter,not being corrupted.may bless reasonably pure items to level one by contact when held by an official of the original faith.It will additional 10-20 percent damage to affected creatures.the creation of a level 10 items involves the permanent sacrifice of psychic energy,or the blood/bones of a martyr.otherwise all lvl 9 rules apply.with 50 percent more production time
Level 11-as above,but the item becomes more self aware,and other enchantments outside the basic blessing become standard.a level 11 item must be at least partially blessed by the faith�s highest officials.The item may not be corrupted,nor destroyed.it does 20-30 percent more damage then a conventional blessed weapon,and may bless other items up to lvl 2 by contact.
while not being fully intelligent the item can sense when it is being used by a individual of impurity or for a purpose that goes against the faith of the blessing parties,and will not function.
level 12-the artifact is aware,has powers outside the blessing,and usually involves a body part of a saint/hero.It may bless items up to level 3 by contact.It does 40 percent or more additional damage.to unholy creatures.
