plot synopsis
a southern judge (judge turpin) is actually a hidden descendant of the southern family that once owned the land that the hogsqaush state prison is on.they used dark secrets to keep possession of their slaves even after death.the bodies of the slaves have long gone, but their souls are still bound in the ground beneath the prison.they have been communicating with an isolated prisoner (Larry Fischer).they have told him how to create more zombies to come in and free their tormented souls.Larry had decided to bring a fellow inmate in on his scheme, converting people at the nursing home they have work assignments at.The seniors, generally being lonely and in some degree of discomfort ,eagerly participate in the scheme once the word spreads every senior is involved with the powders that make them feel young again.gradually the become more involved even chanting some African rites.they have also had some luck with elderly prisoners inside the jail as well.
when the rains came the true nature of the promised immortality takes place.they are all zombies moving on the prison to free the trapped souls during the flood
Judge turpin has been following events, and plans to welcome the zombies assault on the prison because it will help him in his quest to buy the prison property, and finish the manor his ancestors never could.the more people that die the easier it will be for him.he even takes the majority of the prisons ammunition.he also delays a shipment of food to the prison so the truck will get caught in the flood so he can prime things inside for a riot inside as well.when all the zombies are inside he plans to use the power in the prison foundation to control them.(easily done)
he is also planning to use his knowledge of the local pastor’s (Harold Sweeney) sins to blackmail him into making everything easier on the local population.
he has also placed morons and easily corruptible people in the prison staffing (cletus woodshed and Tom webber) under the guise of being helpful.
the fly in the ointment is the fact that an east coast lawyer, and his wife (Ron and donna Johnson) are imprisoned for reckless driving, the lawyer was a slave in his former life, and the head injury he received in the accident has given him supernatural insights...
confederate graveyard
the confederate graveyard is the closest thing Hogsqaush has to a spot for tourists, but it is not a very good attempt.the high point are the cinnamon rolls that have icing on top in the pattern of the confederate battle flag, based on Sarah sweetbread’s award winning recipe.
there is a small snack shop, giftshop, and museum.
the giftshop showcases low grade civil war memorabilia for southern sympathizers.
A bitter old man named Ezekiel j. Getty runs the shop.he has massive lung problems, and can barely maintain the business, but he still gets a gleam in his eye when he can dress up like general lee,and give a tour he really likes giving school children the tour.he used to run a reptile farm before he got one to many bites.he has been sad since the death of his spouse.
judge turpin owns the mortgage, and the old man has been having trouble making the payments.
underneath the graveyard is a hoard of gold that was hidden from union troops, known only to judge Turpin,as well as some tunnels leading to the prison.
prison history
the prison grounds first began life rather infamously as a graveyard for slaves after the original graveyard was flooded for an extended period of time, and some rather grisly souvenirs began to float up from the shallow graves ,so Jefferson Jeffries the first, the plantation owner ,moved it up on to a hill to prevent bloated crop of decaying bodies from washing up and spoiling supper ever again.
the Jeffries had a notorious reputation for cruelty, and by the time the Jefferson Jefferies the third became the plantation holder it had grown even worse.some slave dealers would not even sell to him.
the Jefferies had correctly anticipated the civil war well in advance.the graveyard had already fallen into disrepair,as Jefferson the second did not wish to allow African Americans the highest ground in town.they decided to build a fortified area on top of the hill that would protect themselves if troops came advancing in.Jefferson the third was quoted as saying “..at least here natural order will be preserved, and whites will always be on top of the blacks”.construction would have been completed had it not been for a strange series of set backs.by the time union troops came to the site it only a small series of rooms, the foundation and the underground portion of the site had been developed, but that did not prevent the union troops from being shocked by what they found none the less.
there were all order of torture devices in the underground chambers, and several half dead slaves to testify to their uses.the Jefferies had put up a strong fight using improvised barracades, but they could not of held the day with a less then half complete fortress.the entire Jeffries clan was killed, and humiliated in a very ungentlemanly manner by the union troops.
the site remained somewhat of a local landmark until just before world war 2 ,when it was developed into a prison by the city using the still strong foundation in order to bring some government money and jobs to the town.
now the prison is beginning to show its age,and is badly in need of major updates and repair, but the scheduled updates had to be canceled when the meatpacking plant left town, depriving the city of most of it’s income.
Hogsqaush Alabama
this town is the kind of place people send someone they don’t want to see.it is surrounded by marsh,it is always unbearably humid.it’s main industries are the prison the nursing home, and the mental hospital.
Hogsqaush lies on a series of hills surrounded by marshland/swamp ,and is in close proximity to local rivers,so historically flooding has always been a problem in the lower portions of town, but the comparatively recent addition of a dam to the north had been eliminating the problem until the record rainfall of this year when the dam was overpowered.
people only had a slight amount of warning due to the sudden and unexpected potency of this recent storm.most have taken what they can and gone to relatives hoping for the best.others have moved to the high ground.mostly they are employees of the businesses that are on the higher ground.the higher ground is occupied by the prison, the nursing home, the mental hospital, the gas station, and the civil war graveyard/memorial/tourist trap.
this town has been in a tailspin ever since the meat packing plant closed down.the plant manager made it a point of helping the local community by sponsoring softball teams.parades, school activities, the fourth of July fireworks, and the periodic picnic.in addition because it was such a large employer it was the center of most people’s social activities in some form.the concerns from the company owner about needing to be more competitive did not go unheeded by the local population.the plant was always profitable to spite being farther away from transit hubs.however profit ruled the day,and the plant was moved taking only a small portion of it’s staff. there is a tremendous amount of bitterness in the town about the closure.the beloved plant manager eventually shot himself in an alcoholic stupor, after half the town started taking to the bottle.very little notice or severance pay was given.
for recreation there is a small mom-n-pop drive in,a drive in restaurant called the yummy creme (a popular youth hang out),and a small mini-golf course.
pastor Harold Sweeney
How many good acts does it take to make up for one evil deed?
Harold Sweeney was born to a wealthy Boston family, well educated, and well funded.Harold was far too bookish to play all the social games, and make the right friends.it didn’t take much to bring him into the ministry from a life of pretense, and indulgence.having a pastor in the family could at least provide for some sense of having contact with spirituality,so his change was accepted at first.
at a family gathering Harold met his wife,an attractive young lady tired of the upper class as well.
they married, and soon became missionaries in Africa to get as far away from their families as possible.by the end of a year complication in Sarah’s pregnancy forced a move back to the states.
the child was born, and for the next seven years our couple puttered about various clerical duties.Sarah published a modestly successful series of childrens books.
then she was murdered
the case was quick, the jury hardly had to deliberate, given the standing of the good pastor in the community.the man was sent to prison, but that wasn’t enough for Harold, the sentence wasn’t enough.inconsolable Harold took to the bottle.he nursed the bottle as he lost his job,and alienated his friends and family.his young son Todd grew up fast, and payed most of the bills, and gave their small apartment any order at all.a old college friend was finally able to get Harold into treatment.
most people fixate on a higher power to get them out of alchoholism, and pastor Sweeney was no exception,he focused not on a god,but on revenge.
he came out sober and took his son to hogsqaush Alabama.just about the only assignment he could get,and happily home of the federal correctional facility where his wives murderer was imprisoned.
under the cover of missionary work Harold began volunteering at the prison.he would smuggle in cigarettes discreetly to the right people, make the right recommendations at parole hearings to insure that his wives murderer would go through hell.
one night he went into the infirmary after his victim had been severely brutalized to gloat, but when he saw the half alive mass on the table he could only weep.hatred became pity instantly at the sight of his butchery.
that night Harold caught on fire, and has been resolved to do all he can to atone for his wrongs.he has become a pillar in this small town, and has genuinely begun to help the people here in the nursing home, sanitarium, and prison with no regard for himself or his son.
recently an attractive young member of his flock took a shine to pastor Sweeney.one night after cleaning up after a church potluck.she got him in his office.and began kissing him when Ruthie, the church assistant knocked.she has been bringing the good pastor cookies for the prisoners for over a month.after which the prerequisite intimacy takes place.she is painful undereducated (been in this town all her life),and might even like the moral authority she would know as the pastor’s wife, but it feels so good not to be alone after so many years.it is really nice to have some one periodically help with the laundry, and cooking too.
judge Turpin and the pastor have a good relationship,he took the pastor under his wing as soon as he heard that they had both lost a spouse.a good friend, but it is really irritating in the way that he is always offering Harold a drink.
Donna Elvira Johnson
you were once a covergirl for guns and ammo.
your father,Leo Kramarchzuk, was the third generation from polish immigrants that started a very successful meat business.it is now a several states across the south with high quality commercial accounts
daddy was the wealthiest man in town, and nothing was too good for his little girl, but
Having to hold your own among 5 brothers wasn’t always easy, but you showed them all.after begging to be taken on one of the hunting trips ,you out shot all the boys.your choice after high school was to go to college,or join the women’s u.s. Olympic shooting team.daddy gave you a very expensive customized rifle for graduation, but you decided to go to school so you could have a social life, and have something to fall back on after the Olympics.
then in your junior year you saw an attractive African American lawyer speaking at your school, and you liked him even more when you met him at the campus republicans that night.he was a very uptight man,but then,You always liked the brainy guys.he never really had a chance once you set your sites on him.with in a month you had dropped out and moved into his upstate new York home.
some of your brothers didn’t take very well to the marriage, but daddy had given you his passionate blessing for marriage after receiving some invaluable tax advice from your fiance over the phone, before being aware of his race.
you can’t say that you didn’t enjoy the honeymoon,he really adores you.normally the man is so cheap he is making nearly 100 thousand dollars a year, and he still brings his lunch to work in a paper bag in his brief case, but he really went all out for the honeymoon.scuba diving, glass bottom boat rides, flowers, the best hotels, and an exhaustive amount of intimacy.
your husband had everything characteristically well planned
so after the honeymoon he had to meet with some clients,so you met some girlfriends for a hunting trip, and Ron would pick you up on his way back north.you also had time to squeeze in a trip to a large gun show.you took off your ring and were able to be the belle of the ball, using your potent flirting skills.you really loaded up.some of the men showed you their “private/semi-legal reserves”.Ron is going to have a heart attack when he finds out what you have done to his gold card.you have 2 additional steamer trunks full of items for your gun collection.even some still functional ww2 items.late in the trip mourning sickness hit,and you discovered you were pregnant.things had been going very well.but Ron likes to have everything planned to the minutest detail.you are very nervous about how he will react to the news.
on the way back north you are trying to get him buttered up to tell him about your pregnancy. It was raining outside, the Barry white 8 track was playing, your snuggling close, working the mood...when something bad happened.
you nearly ran the son of the local priest off the road.you were nervous and forgot what a powerful distraction you can be.
the boy was unharmed, but Ron got a nasty head wound.his beloved Cadillac was totaled.you think you and the baby are o.k.
the past few hours haven’t been easy.to spite being a tough woman you are about at your wits end.it would be difficult enough being an interracial couple in this town, but your maiden name is still on your driver’s liscense, and you remember vaguely that you once came to this town with your father as a little girl in pig tails.he used to have a big plant here, that he closed down.you’ve been told several times by the locals that they don’t have a great deal of affection for your family.
once violence erupted between you and one of the guards after some off color remarks about your husband.you got a black eye,but he is going to be taking his food through a straw thanks to your kick.
your patron saint, and savior has been an older guard named Marge.she has been around and has more respect then her tiny stature would indicate.she is keeping you safe from angry guards, and bringing you bandages for your husband.she talks to you in a warm relaxing voice.she used to be the wife of the plant supervisor, who killed himself after your father’s plant closed.she doesn’t blame you.she remember’s what a sweet little girl you were when you came here with your father, and that you ate so many of her delicious apple turnover’s that you got sick.
your husband Ron.has really only been fully lucid once, mostly he mumbles in feverish Latin,or recites legal precedents mixed with sports statistics or his mother’s recipe for catfish.
thank god they haven’t been able to find the hidden key for the trunks of weapons that were in the car,or get them open
thank god for Marge.
and no one is going to mess with your man.
Tom Webber
you thought it would be best to remove the ghosts of the Vietnam war by starting a large family with your high school sweetheart.it worked out well until that Hanson bastard closed the meat packing factory that you had poured your soul into.it was a good job too.
your nickname in Vietnam was weenie.you ,increasingly, you miss your friends from the army.even though you lost your left leg below the knee in a v.c. booby trap, you miss the camaraderie, and would gladly trade your nagging wife and screaming kids for shit on a shingle and a night out with the boys.in fact you like your drink.it really takes the edge off.your seldom entirely sober off work, and sometimes on (when it’s not important).you keep a store of bourbon in your hollow leg so your nagging wife can’t hide it.
you are a likable fellow, and even get along with judge turpin well.in your rare free time you hang out with your remaining buddies from the plant.you also have taken a shine to Todd Sweeney,he is fun to be around, and doesn’t judge you.he also helps you with the prison racket so you can support your wife, and five kids.
money stress is always present since you lost your job.you are in the reserves, work nights at the drive in,and days at the prison (judge turpin got you the job).on the weekends sometimes you do yard work for the judge and pastor Sweeney.
your wife has left for her mother’s with the kids fearing the flood.your home was well prepared by her,but you forgot to unite the dog who has now drowned in the flood waters.you didn’t go,so you could get some extra money working at the prison this weekend, and get away from your wife
recently you were walking Todd home after having some drinks in the rain, and he was nearly hit by a Cadillac.the car was totaled.had Todd been sober the whole situation likely would have been avoided.
you have just finished rebuilding a chopper, and drove it to the prison lot because your wife took the car,and had a freind take the station wagon with them.
Todd Sweeney
things haven’t been the same since mom died, and then dad started drinking, but even worse..he moved you to this nowhere redneck town.the only good thing about this place is that you’ve got to meet some colorful characters helping out at the prison under the guise of helping out the ministry. They have told you things that you would have never discovered back north. The prisoners are more of a parent to you then your dad ever was,and all it takes is a few cigarettes, with favor or two.there isn’t a scam they haven’t taught you.you can hotwire, forge, and scam with your education from Hogsqaush state penetentary university.you routinely smuggle treats for your favorite prisoners, and work with them in the shop learning.no prisoner will harm you for fear of retaliation from prisoners, angry guards, and your vital role in the prison economy.
It wasn’t hard to get prisoners to make life a living hell for the man who murdered your mom either.
school is terrible, even though they let you graduate you are taking some summer classes to make up for some school missed. It was missed because it was hopelessly dull.you are light years ahead of these hillbilly primates.their are no resources,no challenges for you here.school really helped you empathize with the prisoners.
you don’t have friends at school.the people you turn to are are all older then you because you can talk to them.you love to help out Tom Webber at the drive in,and hear his stories about Vietnam.he lets you drink and smoke as well.he buys you cigarettes for the prisoners, and helps you work the market with them.he is your partner in crime.
you’ve pulled a bunch of stunts involving your ill gotten knowledge, but no one has any proof.the only people to suspect you are your classmates, who suspect you of everything, that withered old walking corpse judge turpin, and Tom Webber who enjoys it.judge turpin always gives you the evil eye,and has told you that he is on to your stunts several times, but for some reason hasn’t mentioned them to your father.either it’s the old bastards way of being friendly or he is as insane as you think he is.
recently Tom,and yourself had been drinking, joking and smoking on the roof of the drive in watching star wars.you had a little too much to drink, and Tom was walking you home in the pouring rain when you nearly got run over by this beautiful woman in a nice Cadillac.you really don’t know who’s fault it was, you were really tipsy.her car was totaled.
you hope dad didn’t smell the alcohol .
Ron Johnson
hard work and dignity
you didn’t start out in life with much of a chance.
poor family,4 kids, dad running off.you never understood how your mother could manage.at least she was able to die in the nice house you bought her.your going to put your nephews though school too,and no one is ever going to compare you to your father.
from 10 to 30 you had your nose to the grindstone, and never looked up.you were the first black man in a prestigious new York law firm.you set a record for being brought in as a partner.you worked hard, and earned everything you ever got.not everyone can deal with the pressure in corporate law.
you agreed to take a case for an ailing friend,it was your first criminal case, but you managed to get him off with your inhuman attention to detail.
because you knew he was guilty, you kept him at your upstate home.(that is why you tried to stay out of criminal law in the first place)
he just grew into doing work for you.
he looks into matters for you,and helps with other tasks.
he is your favorite person outside of your wife.
you were sent out to speak at a southern law college,to hopefully get some recruits.
you got your wife.
you never thought you would adore a disorganized white woman so much.
to spite the extremely deliberate nature of your life, she was skinny dipping in your upstate pool within 2 weeks.
you were wed shortly thereafter.
the honeymoon was blissful.
you dropped her off to go hunting while you stopped into see some clients.
you picked her up for the drive back rush, and were rushing to avoid regional flooding.she was being incredibly romantic while you were driving when....
Ray Jones
in vietnam you saved your friend weenie after his leg was taken out in a v.c. booby trap.
Ray hated the world after Vietnam, and he showed it so.There isn’t much illegal that he hasn’t done.He worked with “wildman” Larry Fischer dealing in drugs for about two years when things got too hot. it was decided to divide up the profits, and Larry would keep the business while Ray scouted things out in a new city.
you did him a favor before you left.
there was a lady that had been purchasing from you,and you saw her talking to police.with your bags all ready packed, you shot her down, and calmly drove north never looking back.you made your break from Larry square, and telling him you were looking at expansion was just your way of getting away without getting him suspicious.
things weren’t much better in the new town.within a year the cops had you on all they needed.
you were going to jail for a long time, until the grace of god sent you Ron Johnson.
the best attorney you could afford was sick,Ron was doing a favor for a friend, and normally didn’t take criminal cases.
he had you out of custody in 3 days after he found a loophole that no one else would have found after digging through tons of legal books.
he took responsibility for you after the case, and seeing how you had nowhere else to live,it wasn’t bad living in his posh upstate home.
there never was really a formal agreement between you,at first,he just would give you money and you would do basic errands, and look into things for him.
things become a little more formal later
it isn’t bad work. the pay isn’t as good, but it is steady, and is less likely to land you in jail.
You wish you could bust a few more heads in your job
you enjoy his new wife.hopefully she will break him into being less anal retentive.sometimes things are amusing to watch.she has always gone out of her way to be nice to you,and any gorgeous white chick that you can go out with to shoot stuffed animals, have beer, and spit is alight in your book.
you were at the house and she called you in hysterics saying something had happened to Ron..you had pulled you gun out of the cabinet before the call was over, and were rapidly on your way to Hogsqaush Alabama.
you don’t know how you got here, you only know that it involved a lot of money, little sleep, and every means of transportation known to man
you got on an outdated pontoon boat and puttered up to the jail in the rain.
Sarah Sweetbread
More then anything in the world Sarah would like to put the rumors that she was a slut in high school to rest..
nothing would do that like having a couple kids, after wedding the town minister.
it is fascinating to hear him talk, even if sometimes he does go over your head.he still needs someone to take care of him,and give him her award winning cooking.
he is the most decent man you have ever known.
your are trying to make headway with his son,but it isn’t working real well.the boy is hurting so badly, but you overheard that the judge was going to recommend him at his prestigious alma mater,so he will be out of the picture soon anyways.
you’ve just got up early to bake some treats for your sweet Harold, you baked until you could feel the water on your feet from the flood.
you’ve put on your best blue dress, and made your self look as pretty as you possible can (which is very pretty indeed).
it is time to step up the battle for Harold’s heart, you aren’t getting any younger.
you put on your raincoat and row up to the prison with the most steaming fresh, state fair award winning, melt in your mouth culinary masterpieces that any daughter of the south has ever managed for her man
you hate your job as a waitress at the yummy creme drive up restaurant
your family is staying with relatives in Montgomery.you stayed behind for Harold
Cletus Woodshed
cletus sits in the gun tower all day enjoying the sense of power he gets off his machine gun,and periodically threatening a prisoner after blowing a squirrel to atoms.it isn’t a bad job.
your wife has stringy greasy red hair and is missing a couple of teeth missing, but she won’t get them fixed because them help her hold her cigarettes.
you haven’t been able to have any children because “your boys ain’t jumpin”.,not like your pal Tom Webber’s,anyways,or like the cold kisses that come out of sweet April.,that’s your name for your favorite machine gun in tower three.
you don’t really wish you had that high school education, but you wouldn’t mind seeing more of the world like Tom,or you really wouldn’t mind seeing more of that chick that they’ve got in the cell 36.hopefully her old man will be a vegetable, and she will be here a long time once the judge gets done with her.you’ve been periodically thinking of her since you saw her in the April issue of gun’s-n-ammo a year or so back.she was an oylmpic shootist or something she sure is fine.
the judge got you a job at the prison after the plant closed, said he owed your daddy a favor.he stuck up for you when they got this hot-shot city guy to help run the jail.the city guy was driven out soon after he started messing with loyal people like you.
your wife left because of the flood.she started going nuts in your trailer home, about something or other.she might not come back.
Larry Fischer
you didn’t do it.
after all you have done, to get imprisoned for one of the things you would never want to do is just infuriating.in a perverse way it is damning to your criminal artistic pride, like people only giving credit to Matisse for the painting of dogs playing poker.
you’ve got no idea who did.you wouldn’t want to take out a discreet, and actually pleasant customer who only periodically bought small amounts of pot,and had turned you on to some good high society connections, but the people who she introduced you to were powerful enough to make things go fast.they got you in one of the worst prisons in the country, after the first year everyone singled out you for a good beating day and night never ending pain
after you nearly died they moved you into solitary confinement.it was maddening being alone with only the constant dull pain, the cheap medication they would give you never really worked.
but then you got friends.
in the worst beating you had taken a severe blow to the head.they had to give you a glass eye,but they only had blue to go with your black skin.they only had ill fitting dentures to repair the damage to your jaw.the steel plate in your head never felt right either.
one day when you were pressing the steel plate against the wall to ease the pain you could hear someone whispering to you.they could make you feel better.they talk to you through the hole in your head
they told you all kinds of things.about their need to rest, about their pain, about life on the plantation, and about African black magic.
when they agreed to let you sweep up at the retirement home you got your chance.you were considered to dangerous to talk to the seniors, but you worked with another prisoner on the work bus.
you smuggled out the cure, because they only inspected you on the way back in.the seniors loved it,it cured their pain, and your associate dropped hints about stopping aging (what kind of immortality was never mentioned).they were all too happy to do anything that was asked of them, including the swallowing of the crickets, and the simple chant they were shown.
they all changed when the rains came..
they came to eat,and free the souls trapped below the prison.
some prisoners fell for your treatment too, only they will come out later in the second stage.
then they promised they would take you with them to where there is no more pain.
Judge Oliver Turpin
you wish people could just call you Oliver jefferies, the last descendant of the Jefferson jefferies who originally built the foundation for this prison, but that would ruin everything.
you’ve be awaiting these days forever.
ever since you lied to the owner of the meat processing plant telling him to close it down, before a strike would hit.
ever since you were waiting for the remains of the slaves to speak to Larry Fischer.
you’ve got the owner of the confederate cemetery under your thumb above ground, while the family slaves burrow remove the gold that was hidden from the union troops underneath.
soon you will be able to buy the land back, and finish the house your ancestors started
when the house is finished there will be no more uprisings. the souls that came to the plantation, and were fire branded with symbols of eternal servitude shall know their lot in life.
you shouldn’t have a problem gaining control of the slaves from the unfortunate mr.Fischer, after they have done their much needed housecleaning.
mr.Fischer will make a good slave because he has already been broken in.
you can blackmail the priest Sweeney, you know everything he has done.you’ll be able to continue working with him.it would be a shame to lose a golf partner over acceptable housing.maybe you should get him hitched to that sweetbread woman that is after him.maybe she could give him a couple kids.no...he was a terrible parent the first time around, and you never had the opportunity to have a child.
such a lovely house is going to need an heir...
she is unconscious...
well, when I am done ,I will let him think the child is his
I can even use her as a hostage.
she really cares for him... it will be so genuine..so delicious
and if something happens to me, the grounds will always call the bloodline back to them.
