Netscape Communicator Tips #12

*1. When you enter the words

view-source:

before the URL in the Location box (for example,
view-source:http://www.page.com), the page's source code
appears. This is just another quick way to get to the source
of the matter.

*2. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--WHAT'S HAPPENING?

When you want to know what's going on when a page loads, press
Ctrl-Alt-T (while the page loads). A status dialog box opens,
giving you information about the connection.

*3. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--GET SOME ELBOW ROOM

Press Ctrl-Alt-S to hide the status bar at the bottom of the
Netscape Communicator browser window. Doing so gives you a
little more room to view the proceedings on screen. When you
want the status bar back (if you do), just press
Ctrl-Alt-S again.

*4. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--SEE WHAT RUNS

To check the version of Netscape Communicator that you have
running, type

about:

in the Netsite box. This opens the Netscape About version
screen. This information is helpful if you want to get the
latest version.

*5. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--REMEMBERING PASSWORDS

Many Web sites have passwords that you must enter before you
can access the site. If you're like most people, you have a
heck of a time remembering all those passwords. One way to have
the password at your fingertips is to attach a note to the
bookmark (of course, you'll have bookmarked any site that you
need a password for). To attach a note, select Bookmarks, Edit
Bookmarks to open the bookmarks file, then select the bookmark
that you want. Select Edit, Bookmark Properties to open the
Bookmark Properties box for the bookmark. Enter the password
(or anything else you want to add) in the Description box.
Click OK to close the box.

*6. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--ACCESSING BOOKMARKS

Our previous tip explained how to open the bookmarks file to
edit your bookmarks. You can press Ctrl-B from the Communicator
browser for the quickest access to the bookmarks file.

*7. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--ADDING A BOOKMARK

For the quickest way to add a Web page to your bookmark file,
press Ctrl-D when you're at the page. The bookmark is added
before you even think about it.

*8. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--TWO NAMES, SAME PLACE

Does the Location box have an identity crisis? You've probably
noticed that the box that indicates the URL is sometimes called
Location and sometimes Netsite. This simply indicates the
source server. If the Web site is located on a Netscape Web
server, the box is labeled Netsite; otherwise, it's labeled
Location. Go to the Netscape home page to see this work.

*9. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--READING MANY LINKS

If the current page or frame contains many links, press Tab to
move from link to link. The link's URL appears in the Location
box as it's tabbed--just press Enter to access it.

*10. BROWSING WITH COMMUNICATOR--SAVING WEB PAGES

Communicator makes it easy to save Web pages to a file in the
HTML format. To do this, open Communicator and access the page
you want to save. Select File, Save As, then choose the
location to save the file to and enter a file name. Make sure
you choose HTML Files as the file type. Click Save to save
the file.
