Microsoft FrontPage #14

*1. TASK TRIVIA

August 4th, 1999

This week we've been discussing FrontPage tasks and associating
them with files. Here are some of the things you can do in
Tasks view (to jump to Tasks view, click the Tasks icon from
the Views bar):

* To modify a task, right-click the task and choose Edit.
* To show that you've completed a task, right-click the task
and choose Mark Complete. The task icon changes from a red
circle to a green one. (The next time you go to Tasks view,
the completed task will not appear.)
* To remove a task, right-click it and choose Delete.

*2. A SHORT HISTORY OF TASKS

August 5th, 1999

By default, Tasks view displays only the tasks you have not yet
completed. To view a list of all tasks, just right-click a
blank area of the view and choose Task History. Both future and
past tasks appear.

*3. THE TRUTH ABOUT FONTS

August 6th, 1999

Keep in mind that when you select a font for your text
(highlight the text and then make a selection from the Font
menu on the Standard toolbar), your visitors must also have
this font on their systems. Otherwise, they see the default
browser font, usually Times.

*4. FREE STUFF

August 9th, 1999

Ah, so you like a freebie once in a while. Who doesn't? We
often get requests for information on free Web hosting. There
are a few free services around that support FrontPage,
including the popular Tripod service at

http://www.tripod.com

Another is HomePage.com at

http://www.homepage.com

which offers an easy-to-remember name, in the form
yoursite.homepage.com. Strangely, if someone has registered
the name you want, you can bid on it. Internet auction
fever continues . . .

*5. MORE FREE STUFF

August 10th, 1999

Yesterday, we mentioned two free services that support
FrontPage: Tripod and HomePage.com. Another contender is
Com-Prod.com at

http://www.com-prod.com

This service offers 10MB of free server space, although (like
most services) it requires you to place its logo on your page.

*6. EVEN MORE FREE STUFF

August 11th, 1999

Is your site running slowly? Do you suffer from broken links?
Is the neighbor's HTML cleaner than yours? Find out at
SiteInspector, at

http://www.siteinspector.com

This free service from LinkExchange (also a very cool free
service) checks your home page for problematic HTML, browser
compatibility issues, spelling, and load time (among other
useful checks).

*7. SON OF EVEN MORE FREE STUFF

August 12th, 1999

Like the SiteInspector service we mentioned yesterday, Web Site
Garage can check your home page for download speed, spelling,
and HTML design. For about $10 a month, you can upgrade to a
full version that scans your entire site (up to 50 pages).
Visit Web Site Garage at

*8. FASTER NAVIGATING SHORTCUTS

August 13th, 1999

As you create pages, you may often jump between Normal and
Preview mode. You can make the switch without picking up the
mouse. To quickly preview your page, press Ctrl + Page Up. To
jump back to editing mode, press Ctrl + Page Down. Press
either combination more than once, and you toggle through the
next mode, from Normal to HTML, for example.

*9. CHANGE YOUR VIEWS

August 16th, 1999

This week we salute the right-mouse button, which can be an
amazing help when building pages. In the next few days, we
reveal some of our favorite right-click tricks.

Do you sometimes have trouble seeing all the icons in the
Views bar (the pane running down the left-hand side of the
window) in FrontPage Explorer? If so, right-click anywhere in
the Views bar and choose Small Icons from the menu that
appears. Ta-da! You can see all the icons now.

*10. RENAME GAME

August 17th, 1999

Here's how to use the right-mouse button to change the name
of a file:

- 1. Change to Folders view (in FrontPage Explorer, click the
Folders icon in the Views bar).
- 2. Right-click the file you want to rename to select it (the
     file name is highlighted).
- 3. Type a new name for your file and press Enter.
