Microsoft FrontPage #9

*1. OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

May 21st, 1999

You learn by trial and error. We all do. But that could very
well mean that you have a bunch of extra Web sites cluttering
your hard drive that you don't need any more. Time for
spring cleaning.

- 1. In FrontPage Explorer, open the web that you want to
delete (choose File + Open FrontPage Web, select the web,
     and click OK).
- 2. Choose File + Delete FrontPage Web.
- 3. The Confirm Delete dialog box appears, offering you a
chance to be really sure you want to delete this web
because once it's gone, it's REALLY gone--no getting it
back. If you're sure, click Yes.

Done. Now you'll have more hard drive space to play with.

*2. UNDO WHAT YOU DID (AGAIN)

May 25th, 1999

You may have noticed that the FrontPage Editor offers support
for Undo. But did you know that this feature works up to 30
times? Just keep pressing Ctrl + Z until you get the page back
to the desired state. If you go too far, select Ctrl + Y to
redo the command you just, uh, undid.

*3. HORIZONTAL LINES--YOUR WAY

May 26th, 1999

Horizontal lines are a great way to separate text and graphic
elements. For even more control over the look of your page, try
customizing your horizontal lines. Here's how to create a line
in the color of your choice:

- 1. Place the cursor where you want the line to appear.
- 2. Choose Insert + Horizontal Line.
- 3. Right-click the line and choose Horizontal Line Properties
     (or press Alt + Enter).
- 4. From the Horizontal Line Properties dialog box, choose the
     line's height, width, and alignment.
- 5. Click the Color pop-up box to change the color from its
default gray and select Solid Line (No Shading) to create
     a clean and attractive separator.
- 6. Click OK to close the Horizontal Line Properties
     dialog box.

*4. GET A BETTER (EXPLORER) VIEW

May 27th, 1999

Often when viewing files in FrontPage Explorer, you won't be
able to see the full descriptions of files, because your
columns aren't wide enough. Here's a shortcut to fix the
problem without resizing each column. From the Folders view,
hold the Ctrl key while pressing the plus key (+) on the
numeric keypad. The columns automatically adjust to show you
the full description of a file, such as its name, title,
and size.

*5. OFFICE UPDATE TO THE RESCUE

May 28th, 1999

Need help finding assistance with FrontPage? When even Dummies
Daily can't help you (say it ain't so!) just point your
browser to

http://officeupdate.microsoft.com

-From there, click the FrontPage link and then the Assistance
link. Here you can find a host of tutorials, Knowledge Base
articles, and other links to services that answer frequently
asked questions.

*6. GET HELP ON THE NET

June 1st, 1999

When you run into a tough problem with FrontPage, one of the
best places to find help is the recently updated Deja Web site
(formerly DejaNews), at

http://www.deja.com

You don't need to configure a newsgroup reader to use the
service. You just need an Internet connection and your browser.
Browse the primary FrontPage newsgroup at

news:microsoft.public.frontpage.client

or type in a few keywords related to your problem in the Search
Discussions text box. Then click Search.

*7. FIND AN ISP

June 2nd, 1999

Need help finding an ISP that supports the FrontPage Server
Extensions? (Keep in mind that if your ISP doesn't support the
extensions, you can't use components such as the search engine
feature or the hit counter.) Just point your browser to

http://microsoft.saltmine.com/frontpage/wpp/list

There you find a link to ISPs that support the server
extensions. Tomorrow, we discuss more ways to find a
good provider.

*8. UPGRADING TO FRONTPAGE 2000--PART 1 OF 5

June 7th, 1999

FrontPage 2000 offers plenty of reasons for the serious Web
publisher to upgrade. Although casual users may not benefit
from the newest version, those who manage intranets and large
corporate and personal sites will enjoy the improved interface
and publishing tools.

If you're an old hand with FrontPage 98, you'll first notice
that the interface has been simplified. You no longer need to
run the FrontPage Explorer to manage pages and then open the
Editor separately to change pages. The interface has been
combined so that you can manage pages by clicking a Folders
icon or edit pages by clicking the Page icon--a time-saving
change indeed.

*9. FIND YOUR HOME

June 3rd, 1999

Is your ISP letting you down? If you're shopping for a new ISP
that supports the FrontPage extensions, a great site to check
out is budgetweb.com, at

http://www.budgetweb.com

And another great site is The Ultimate Web Host List, at

http://webhostlist.internetlist.com

Both offer updated factoids on hosting, including prices and
amount of disk space offered. Depending on your needs, you can
find sites from $20 to $25 that offer features such as e-mail
accounts, file backup, and 24-hour technical support.

*10. THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF GIF

June 4th, 1999

Nothing drives visitors to your Web site crazier than
slow-loading pages. One of the simplest ways to slim download
times is to reduce the size of your images. Compressing is more
art than science and can be time-consuming. To automate the
process, try GIF Wizard, an online service located at

http://www.gifwizard.com

The site runs a quick site scan to check the efficiency of your
graphics. After this free demo, the site charges $4.95 per
month to compress an unlimited number of your site's photos.
Or you can compress 20 photos for a one-time charge of $4.95
and skip the monthly fee.
