Too Fast to Boot
--by David W. Methvin

Some users running Windows 95 with an AMD-K6 processor at
speeds of 350MHz or higher have had sporadic problems booting
their PCs. Occasionally the systems will fail to boot up and
produce error messages such as "Device IOS failed to
initialize" or Windows Protection Error. This is due to a bug
in Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2, which has a CPU-dependent
timing loop that sometimes fails for these faster AMD CPUs. You
can get a patch for the problem at

http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623d/win95_update_k6.html.

The glitch doesn't affect Windows NT or Windows 98.
