Press No Key On USB
--by David W. Methvin

Last month, we reported a problem in which Windows 98 doesn't
recognize a USB mouse when you boot into Safe Mode. This month,
Microsoft's support document Q198270 at
http://support.microsoft.com has a tale of USB keyboard woes.
If you plug in a USB keyboard and then boot your system, the
keyboard isn't detected until you get past the log-in dialog.
But of course you can't log in until you've typed your password
using the keyboard. How, you may ask, are you supposed to do
that if the keyboard hasn't been detected yet? The solution is
to use your mouse to click Cancel, then log back off once the
Windows Desktop comes up. At that point the keyboard should be
detected and ready for you to type in your password.
