Linux Stuff

Our friend Danyelle in Cumming, Georgia wants to run Linux on a
 486. That's one of our favorite things about Linux - you can
run it on a machine that may have been consigned to doorstop
 territory. Basic things she'll need:

- a one gig hard drive (if her 486 will handle a hard drive that
big, otherwise 500 is OK) so she'll have room to breathe.
- minimum 16 MB of RAM, recommended 32 or more - a boot disk that
will let her use the CD-ROM (Jeremy sez use RAWRITE to create
 the boot disk).

If you use the X window system with Linux you should try the K
Desktop. It's a memory hog, but it really puts a friendly face
on Linux. You can install from source code, of course, but if
 possible install from the binaries.

Redhat users can find the relevant RPMs at the KDE FTP site.
http://www.kde.org. Read the docs and install in the right
order. Or, better yet, get a Linux with KDE preinstalled. Both
 Caldera OpenLinux, http://www.calderasystems.com/, and
 Linux-Mandrake, http://www.linux-mandrake.com, do. Redhat will
 in the next version.
