*1. OPEN LINKS

Reader Elaine D. sends this browser question.

"To save some space, I moved the links up beside the Address Bar
as you suggested in one of your tips. Now, I have to drag the
links into view when I need them, and then drag the Address Bar
back into view when I need it. Is there a way to switch between
the two without all that dragging?"

Actually, there is an easy way, but it isn't especially apparent.
All you have to do is double-click the visible portion of the
Links bar. The bar will then expand to take up the entire space.
To get the Address Bar back to full view again, double-click it.

*2. BACK TO THIS PAGE

Subscriber Alan H. sends this question.

"One thing I have always hated is having to keep clicking that
Back button until I reach a specific page. Is there an easier
way to get back to a particular page--even when it's five or
 six pages back?"

There are several ways to go to a particular page in IE4. You
can click the arrow at the right side of the Address List box.
The list box will expand into a list of recently visited sites.
All you have to do is select the one of your choice.

You can also click the down arrow at the right side of the Back
button. This will open a list of recently visited sites.

And, you can right-click the Back button to open a list of sites.

If all else fails, you can always click the History button on the
toolbar and use the History folder to navigate to a
 previously visited site.

*3. DOCK IT ON THE LEFT

Reader Terry M. sent this request.

"I'm sure I saw a tip somewhere that said you could place the My
Computer folder as a taskbar on the right side of the screen. If
this was one of your tips, could you cover the topic again?"

In fact, you can place My Computer anywhere if you use Active
Desktop. Well, almost anywhere. If you'd like to have the
contents of My Computer always readily available, grab the My
Computer folder with the mouse and drag it to the right side of
the screen. The folder will dock there and open in a bar
 displaying all the folders.

You can dock the My Computer folder at the top, right, or left of
the screen. You can't dock it at the bottom of the screen
because of the Windows 95/98 taskbar.

You can also drag and dock Network Neighborhood and the
 Recycle Bin.

*4. AN ICON OF YOUR CHOICE

Subscriber Billy J. asks if we can explain how to change the icon
 of a Quick Link.

We sure can. To change a Quick Link icon, run IE4 and right-click
the link you want to change. When the menu opens, choose
Properties. Now, click Change Icon. When the Change Icon dialog
box opens, select a new icon and click OK. In the Properties
dialog box, click OK to save your changes and dismiss the
 dialog box.

*5. TWO EGGS IN THE SAME BASKET

We recently ran an Easter Egg tip submitted by reader Janet T.
 Here is the original tip:

To see the Easter Egg, open Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and
select Help, About Internet Explorer. Then, hold down the Ctrl
key and drag the E logo onto the large World icon. Next, release
Ctrl and then hold it down again. Now, move the E back off of
the World icon and to the right (over the text) to reveal an
Unlock button. Click the Unlock button to find the
 first Easter Egg.

In response to this tip, a number of readers pointed out that
there's more. If you hold down the Ctrl key and drag the E logo
back to the World icon, a new window will open with a scrolling
credit list of the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 product team.

*6. HIGH SPEED LOCK-UPS

Here's a question from reader Marty V, which reflects a number of
questions we've received on the same topic:

"I use an Intel Celeron 300A that I overclock to 450 MHz.
Everything but Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 works fine. Can you
tell me how to get Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 to run at the
 higher speed?"

Unfortunately, no. The Celeron 300A is designed to run at 300
MHz. If you have no problems with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4
at the rated 300 MHz, we suggest that you run your computer at
300 MHz. The fact that Microsoft Internet Explorer doesn't run
properly is an indication that your computer doesn't like
 running at the higher speed.

If you ask us (and you did), overclocking any CPU is simply
looking for problems. Not only will you shorten the life of the
CPU and memory (and possibly the motherboard as well), you are
also very likely to run into software problems due to minor
 timing glitches.

*7. FALLING OUT OF FAVOR(ITES)

Several readers, including George J. and Cheryl M., have asked
about the My Documents folder that appears in the Favorites
menu--or more specifically, how to get rid of it.

All you have to do is choose Favorites, Organize Favorites and
click My Documents to select it. Then, press Delete. That's all
 there is to it.

You don't have to worry that you might delete the My Documents
folder from your system--the one you see in Favorites is only a
shortcut that points to the original My Documents folder.

*8. SO LONG TO THE FONTS BUTTON

Reader Alan F. asks if there's a problem with removing the Font
button in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 toolbar.

Fortunately, there's no problem at all. If you'd like to simplify
your toolbar, choose View, Internet Options and click the
Advanced tab when the Properties dialog box opens. Then, scroll
down to Toolbar and deselect the Show Font Button check box.
Now, click OK to close the dialog box and save your changes. The
next time you run Microsoft Internet Explorer 4, the Font button
will not be a part of the toolbar.

After removing this button, you can still change the font. All
you have to do is choose View, Fonts and make your selection.

*9. LINK UP TO YOUR NEWS SERVER

As reader Paul T. points out, you can read your newsgroup
messages while in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 by choosing
Mail, Read News. If you wish, you can also assign a link to
 your news server.

To assign a link, open Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and choose
Favorites, Organize Favorites. Now double-click the Links folder
to open it. Right-click the Links folder and choose New,
Shortcut. When the Create Shortcut wizard opens, type the path
to your news server, in this form:

news://mynewsserver.com

After you type the address, click Next. Then enter a name for
your new link and click Finish.

Back in Organize Favorites, click Close to close the dialog box
 and save your changes.

With your new link in place, you can go directly to your news
server by simply clicking the link.

*10. BACK TO THE CLASSICS

Reader Pat T. asks this Active Desktop question:

"Is there any way to stay with the Classic Settings rather than
Web Mode? I've set my system to Classic and sometimes after I
restart the computer, the system reverts to Web Mode or User
Settings with some of the Web Mode functions activated.
 It's quite annoying at times."

You should be able to turn off the Active Desktop and have it
stay off. Here's what you do:

Right-click the desktop and choose Active Desktop. The View As
Web Page option is a toggle command, so make sure it is not
checked. (If it is, select it to uncheck it.) Then, restart
Windows 95 by clicking Start, then Shut Down. In the resulting
dialog box, select the radio button labeled Restart. Finally,
press and hold down the Shift key while you click OK.

After the computer restarts, open My Computer and then choose
View, Folder Options. In the Folder Options dialog box, click
the General tab and then select the Classic Style radio button.
Next, click OK to close the dialog box and save the changes.
Finally, close the My Computer window (click the close box in
the upper-right corner of the window).
