*1. SUBSCRIBE NOW

Subscriber Elliot S. sent in this News tip:

"All the instructions on how to subscribe to a newsgroup say you
should select the group, then click Subscribe. This isn't
really necessary--all you have to do is double-click the group
to which you want to subscribe."

To see how Elliot's tip works, run News, then click Newsgroups.
When the Newsgroup dialog box with its list of groups opens,
locate the group to which you'd like to subscribe, then
double-click it. You'll find that the tiny newspaper icon
indicating a subscription appears to the left of the
 group name.

You can also double-click a subscribed group's name to
unsubscribe. In both cases, click OK when you finish with the
Newsgroup dialog box to close it.

*2. GO TO MY DATA FOLDER

Suppose you're working with Internet Explorer and you need to
check some files in your download folder, which you've named
C:\Download. Just click on the Address box and type

c:\download

Explorer will open the folder for you. After you finish with
C:\Download, press Alt-left arrow to get back to where
 you started.

This is quicker than minimizing Internet Explorer, then opening
Windows Explorer to check the download folder.

*3. WHAT A PANE!

There's actually a hidden pane in Internet News. It contains
three folders: Outbox, Posted Items, and Saved Items. To access
these folders, click the down arrow in the Newsgroups address
bar to expand the list. You can now select one of the folders.
If you don't see the Address bar, choose View, Toolbars and it
 will appear.

*4. DIAL IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN

If you're having trouble connecting to your ISP, you can instruct
your computer to redial when a connection attempt fails.
Double-click My Computer to open it. Now click Dial-Up
Networking to open it. Choose Connections, Settings. Select
Redial and then set the number of attempts you want the system
to perform before giving up. Set the time between tries, then
click OK to close the dialog box and save your changes.

*5. OFFLINE NAVIGATION

You can use your History folder for offline navigation. After an
Internet Explorer session, first disconnect, then choose View,
Options. Click the View History button. You can choose a site
from the folder contents, and Explorer will navigate to that
page. Internet Explorer can only show you information you've
already saved on your system. If you need more than that, you'll
have to connect. If this happens, IE will prompt you with a
 message to that effect.

*6. TO SLASH OR NOT TO SLASH

When you type an address into Internet Explorer's Address box,
you may find that some addresses won't work with a slash at the
end. For example, you might find that

http://www.xampl.com/xampl/

will fail to work, but

http://www.xampl.com/xampl

works fine. In most cases, Internet Explorer doesn't need that
final slash anyway. So you're probably better off simply
entering the address without the slash in the first place.

*7. TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER

Weather is a favorite topic. Some people just want answers to
simple queries, such as what the weather will be like in their
town tomorrow morning, while others hunger for in-depth details
about climate, tornadoes, hurricanes, snow, and dozens of other
weather-related subjects. To get off to a good start, try the
NOAA regional weather centers. Go to

http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2C2061%2Ctw-0528ie3%2C00.html

and select the office nearest you.

You'll find another treasure trove of interesting weather
 information at

http://www.weather.com

This is the Weather Channel site, which provides weather and
climate information along with the daily forecasts.

*8. SEND IT NOW

Reader Gary T. submitted this Internet Mail tip:

"When you want to create and send a new message in Mail, you can
press Ctrl-N to open a new message. After typing in a message,
you can press Alt-S to send it.

"Note that pressing Alt-S places your message into the Outbox. It
may not actually get sent until you click Send And Receive."

Thanks, Gary.

*9. NEXT, PLEASE

As reader Francine W. mentioned in a recent message, you can move
through your mail messages using only keystrokes if you like.
Let's say you open the first message in your in-box. Now that
you've read the first message, you can press Alt-right arrow. If
you need to move back to a previous message,
 press Alt-left arrow.

*10. YOUR OWN E-THING LINK

This is another of those questions we get on a regular basis.
Reader Paul H. asks if there's a way to change the link in the
E icon in the upper right corner of the Microsoft Internet
 Explorer 3 window.

You can assign the URL of your choice to the E-thing icon. Just
choose View, Options. When the Options dialog box opens, click
the Navigation tab. Now click the arrow at the right side of the
Page list box to expand the list. Select Quick Link #5 from the
expanded list. Next click in the Address entry box and type the
new address. You need to enter the entire address here--for
 example, type

http://www.sample.com

After you enter the new address, click OK to close the dialog box
 and save your new settings.
