*1. DOWNLOADING AN FTP PROGRAM

Reader Sharon K. sends this request:

"I'm a teacher and looking for a good (free or inexpensive) FTP
program I can use to teach my class how to send files to our
home page Web site. Can you recommend something?"

For the most part, we don't like to recommend specific software.
However, we suggest that you examine WS_FTP Limited Edition.
This is an excellent FTP program, and very easy to use. The
Lite version is free for noncommercial use.

You may also like to take a look at SendTo FTP version 1.2 by
Peili Chen. Once you install and set up SendTo FTP, all you
have to do to send a file to your Web site is right-click the
 file and choose SendTo FTP.

*2. BACK TO MAIL

"I recently installed Office 97 on my computer. Since the Office
installation, my Mail default in Microsoft Internet Explorer
3 has become Outlook. I don't care much for Outlook and would
like to go back to Internet Mail and News. Can you explain how
 to do this?"

We sure can. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 and choose View,
Options. When the Options dialog box opens, click the Programs
tab. Now click the arrow at the right side of the Mail list box
and select Internet Mail from the list. Click the arrow at the
right side of the News list box and select Internet News from
the expanded list. Finally, click OK to close the dialog box and
 save your changes.

*3. INSERT SOME TEXT

Subscriber Frank G. sends this tip:

"Many Internet Mail users may not be aware of the fact that you
can easily insert a text file directly into your Mail message.
Let's say you've just started a new message. All you have to do
is click where you want to insert the text file and choose
Insert, Text File. When the Insert Text File dialog box opens,
locate the file you want to insert and click to select it.
Choose Open to insert the file into the body of your message."

Once you insert the file, you can edit the message any way you
like; when you're done, click Send.

*4. MARK IT UNREAD

Reader Bill S. asks this question:

"Is there a way to keep Mail from automatically marking messages
as read? When I open my Mail messages, the first one always ends
up marked Read, even when I haven't had time to read it."

Although Microsoft Internet Mail automatically marks messages as
read when you have previewed them for five seconds, you can turn
off this option if you prefer. Run Internet Mail and choose
Mail, Options. When the Options dialog box opens, click the Read
tab. Now deselect the check box labeled 'Mark message as read
after previewed for xx seconds' and click OK to close the
Options dialog box and save your settings.

*5. DELETING FOLDERS

Reader Leon C. sent this question:

"Is there any way to delete Mail folders? I would like to use a
folder named Keep to store all my sent mail. I want to delete
 the Sent Items folder."

First of all, you can't delete the Sent Items, Inbox, Outbox, or
Deleted Items folders. You can only delete folders you have
created. The only way to move sent mail to a new folder named
Keep is to select the mail in the Sent Items folder and choose
 Mail, Move To, Keep.

To create a new folder, choose File, Folder, Create. When the
Create New Folder dialog box opens, type the new name and
 click OK.

*6. MESSAGE COMPOSITION

Reader Henry A. sent in this Internet Mail and News tip:

"I wonder if most Internet Mail and News users are aware of the
fact that you can use the standard Windows shortcut keys to work
with your messages? For example, Ctrl-X cuts selected text,
Ctrl-C copies it to the Clipboard, and Ctrl-V pastes it. And
don't forget the important Ctrl-Z when you need to undo the
 last operation."

Thanks for the tip, Henry. As you pointed out, these are the most
common Windows keystrokes and can prove helpful to Internet Mail
 and News users.

*7. RULES AND MORE RULES

Here's an Inbox Assistant question from Laurie W.:

"I need to use Inbox Assistant to send certain messages to a new
folder if I have condition1 or condition2. However, when I add
more than one condition in Inbox Assistant, the conditions come
out 'and' rather than 'or,' so I get condition 1 AND condition2.
Can you tell me how to get the 'or' condition?"

You can try using more than one Inbox Assistant. Let's say if you
have condition1 or condition2 in the Subject, the message moves
to the Keep folder. Choose Mail, Inbox Assistant. When the Inbox
Assistant dialog box opens, click Add. Now click Subject and
type Condition1. Click the arrow at the right side of the Move
To list box to expand the list. Select Keep from the list and
 click OK.

Now click Add again. Once more, click Subject and type
Condition2. Select the Keep folder again and click OK.

Back in the Inbox Assistant dialog box, you'll see that messages
containing Condition1 go to Keep. Also, messages that contain
Condition2 go to keep. Messages that contain both Condition1 and
Condition2 go to Keep. So the logical conditions are: If Subject
contains Condition1 or Condition2 or both, send message to
 the Keep folder.

When you finish adding Inbox Assistants, click OK to close the
dialog box and save your settings.

*8. SORT IT YOUR WAY

Reader Daryl C. sent this Internet Explorer Mail suggestion:

"Microsoft Mail sorts the mail in ascending order by date and
time, but I prefer to have it sorted by date and time in
descending order. Sorted this way, the latest mail always
appears at the top of the Inbox rather than at the bottom. To
change the way Explorer sorts your mail, choose View, Sort By
and select Ascending. This toggles the ascending option off and
leaves you with a descending sort. With the descending sort in
effect, your latest messages appear at the top of the
 Inbox pane."

Thanks for the tip, Daryl.

*9. MAKE IT MY HOME

Subscriber Elliot P. sent this question in:

"I would like to change my default home page. The problem is that
I really prefer one of the pages at a Web site. The page I
prefer is not the site's home page. What problems would I
encounter if I tried to set this as my home page in Microsoft
 Internet Explorer 3?"

You would have no problem at all because Microsoft Internet
Explorer 3 doesn't care what you use as a home page. The choice
is entirely yours. To set this page as your home page, navigate
to the site and choose View, Options. When the Options dialog
box opens, click the Navigation tab. Now click Use Current to
set the current page to your Start page. That's all there is to
it. After you click Use Current, click OK to close the dialog
 box and save your selections.

*10. PRINT COLORS

Reader Robert C. submitted this Microsoft Internet Explorer 3
 printing tip:

"You may find URLs don't always print well on your
black-and-white laser printer. You can often get a
better-looking printout if you change the URL colors. To do
this, choose View, Options and click the General tab. Under
Links, double-click the color rectangle next to Visited. When
the Color dialog box opens, select a new color and click OK. Now
double-click Unvisited and choose a new color. Click OK to close
the Color dialog box. Click Visited and make a new color
selection. When finished, click OK. Back in Options, click OK to
save your changes and close the dialog box."

Thanks for the tip, Robert. Note that some URLs may not change
color because the Web site authors have set the colors.

Here's a Mail tip from Kelley S.:

"Microsoft Internet Mail lets you choose whether to use the
preview pane or not. To make the choice, choose View, Preview
Pane and select either None, Split Vertically, or Split
Horizontally. If you elect to use the preview pane, you can also
decide whether you want to view the header information there
(consisting of From, To, and Subject). Choose View, Preview Pane
and select Header Information, which is a toggle command. When
it is checked, selecting it turns off the header feature. When
the option is not checked, selecting it turns the header on."

Thanks for the tip, Kelley.
