*1. ERASING HISTORY

Subscriber Bonnie S. asks this History question:

"My History folder sometimes gets bogged down with sites. I'd like
to eliminate some but not all of the files. If I choose View,
Options, click the Navigation tab, then click Clear History, my
folder gets cleared, but I lose some sites I'd like to keep. Is
there a way to delete only part of the History files?"

The easiest way to delete specific History files is to choose
View, Options and click the Navigation tab. Now click View
History. When the History window opens, hold down the Ctrl key
and select the files you want to get rid of, then press Delete.
When you're finished, choose File, Close to close the History
window. Back in Options, click OK to close the dialog box.

*2. ORGANIZE YOUR FOLDERS

Reader Ron G. sent us this Favorites tip:

"When you want to organize your Favorites folder, you usually
choose Favorites, Organize Favorites. This opens a dialog box
from which you can select various options. If you'd rather just
open the Favorites folder directly, you can choose Favorites,
then press Shift while you choose Organize Favorites."

*3. PUT IN NEW WINDOWS

Subscriber Frank G. submitted this browser tip:

"To open a new page, you press Ctrl-N and then navigate to a new
site. However, if you have a URL on your current page that you
would like to open in a new window, hold down Shift while you
 click the URL."

Thanks for the tip, Frank.

*4. NO INTERRUPTIONS

Reader Carl J. is having trouble with Call Waiting. He says an
incoming call often disconnects him from the Internet. If you
have Call Waiting, you can disable it by dialing *70 before you
make a call. To disable Call Waiting when your computer dials
your ISP, double-click My Computer. Now double-click Dial-Up
Networking. When the Dial-Up Networking dialog box appears, add

*70,

before your dial-up phone number. Click Close to close the dialog
box and save your modification. The next time you call your ISP,
the program dials *70, and pauses before it dials your ISP's
number. So if you normally dial

555-1234

you now dial

*70, 555-1234

Note that the code you use depends on your phone company.
Although *70 is the most common combination, your company may
use a different code. Check to determine what code it uses.

*5. POP-UPS BE GONE!

Reader Janet G. sent this tip:

"If you dislike all those pop-up [ads] as much as I do, you'd
probably like to eliminate them. Just choose View, Options. When
the Options dialog box opens, click the Security tab. Now
deselect the Enable Java Programs check box. Click OK to close
the dialog box and save your selection."

This eliminates most of the pop-ups. However, you may find you've
also eliminated some page features you'd like to keep. Give this
tip a try and see if it does the job. You can always go back to
 the default setting.

Thanks to Janet for the tip.

*6. GIVE 'EM A GREEN LIGHT

Reader Susan W. informs us that you can use Magellan as your
search engine and select the Green Light Sites Only radio button
at the top of the page to keep the kids from running across
pages you don't want them to visit. Of course, you still have to
keep an eye on them to make sure they don't deselect this radio
button or switch to another search engine. This isn't a perfect
solution. On one search, we encountered a rather suggestive
picture. However, it's better than nothing.

If you'd like to make Magellan your default search engine, go to

http://magellan.excite.com

and choose View, Options. When the Options dialog box opens,
click the Navigation button. Now click the arrow at the right
side of the Page list box to expand the list. Select Search Page
from the list, then click Use Current. Click OK to save your new
setting and close the dialog box.

Now whenever you click Search, Magellan opens. If you select the
Green Light Sites Only radio button, Magellan opens with that
 option as the default.

*7. PASSWORD SAVER

A number of readers have reported that Microsoft Internet
Explorer 3 doesn't save their password. According to reader
Jeff. S., this could be because you've only installed TCP/IP and
 not Client For Microsoft Networks.

To correct this, insert your Windows 95 installation disc into
the CD-ROM drive and click Start, Settings, Control Panel. When
the Control Panel opens, double-click the Network icon and then
click the Configuration tab. If you don't see Client For
Microsoft Networks in the list, click Add. Now select Client and
click Add. Next select Microsoft and click OK. Back in Network,
click OK to save your changes and dismiss the dialog box.

You'll be prompted to restart your computer. When it starts
again, your Save Password option should work.

*8. JUMPIN' JAVA

Reader Dale K. informs us that you can greatly enhance the speed
of Java applets in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 if you select
the Java JIT compiler. To do this, run Microsoft Internet
Explorer 3 and choose View, Options. When the Options dialog box
opens, click the Advanced tab. Now select the check box labeled
"Enable Java JIT compiler" and click OK to record the setting
 and close the dialog box.

*9. BOOKMARK CONVERSION

We frequently get mail asking how to convert Navigator Bookmarks
to Microsoft Internet Explorer Favorites. Reader Jesse B.
informs us that you can go to

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q152/6/81.asp?FR=0

and read about converting bookmarks. At this site, you will also
find a link to download a file named winbm2fv.exe. This file
 converts those bookmarks for you.

*10. THE LOST IE-NETSCAPE FRIENDSHIP

Reader Xuan C. sends this browser trick:

"I recently saw a comment on the Internet that said it was
possible to run Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 and Netscape
Communicator simultaneously. So I decided to try it and found
that it works fine. If you tell Netscape not to become the
default browser, you won't have any problems with it taking
over. With both browsers installed, I can run Microsoft Internet
Explorer 3 and then, after I establish a connection, start
Netscape. I can then navigate to any page on either browser. I
thought others might like to try this technique."

We tried it here, and it works just as Xuan describes. If you
like, you can size both browsers so they fit on the screen side
by side. If you already have Netscape installed, or if you have
a copy around, you may want to give it a try just for fun.
However, we're not sure this offers any advantage over simply
using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 in two windows.
