BUG Of The Day Tips #13

*1. LATEST SPXS.NLM PATCH

Novell recently released a patch that addresses several known
problems you may experience with NetWare, versions 3.x and 4.x.
The patch contains a new strtl7.exe file that contains STREAMS,
TLI, SPXS, and IPXS NLM update files. It addresses a host of
problems, including several abend errors. You can download the
patch file strtl7.exe from the Novell Support Web site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm

*2. PERSONAL WEB SERVER FILE ACCESS VULNERABILITY

Microsoft has identified a potential problem you may experience
when you use either Microsoft Personal Web Server or Microsoft
FrontPage Personal Web Server (PWS) on a computer running
Windows 95 or 98. The problem may allow an unauthorized user to
read or copy files from your computer using basic Internet
browser software. The unauthorized user must request the file
using a specific, nonstandard URL and must know or correctly
guess the name of the file. If you have Personal Web Server 4.0
installed on a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98, you
should obtain the latest Personal Web Server 4.0 security patch,
available for download from the Microsoft Software Library at

*3. PATCHING JANE'S F-15 FOR WINDOWS

Jane's F-15 is one of the most realistic and detailed flight
simulation games available. If you're flying with Jane's F-15,
you should be aware of a recently released patch, version 1.07.
This patch adds JanesCombat.Net support, game play adjustments,
and multiplayer improvements. It also fixes the flashing cursor
in 3dfx mode. To download the patch, visit the following
FTP site:

*4. PROBLEMS SHUTTING DOWN VISUAL BASIC

If you're developing with Microsoft's Visual Basic Control
Creation, Learning, Professional, and Enterprise Editions for
Windows, version 5.0, you may be in for a few hang-ups.
Microsoft has identified a problem you may face that causes the
IDE and Visual Basic-created .exe files to hang when shutting
down if they have used the Internet Transfer Control in their
project. Visual Studio 97 Service Pack 3 fixes this bug. For
more information, check out the Microsoft Knowledge Base article
"Visual Studio 97 Service Packs--What, Where, and Why" at

Now that the shortened NBA season is behind us, you may be
getting your basketball fix playing NBA Live 99. If so, you
should be aware of the latest patch for the product, version

*6. NETWARE 5 SUPPORT PACK 2

Novell recently released an update to the Support Pack for
NetWare 5--Support Pack 2. This support pack contains updates
for all the services included in the NetWare 5 box. The purpose
of the support pack is to provide a bundle of fixes that have
been tested together. Novell doesn't recommend installing
individual files from the support pack.

These files have undergone component testing, core OS testing,
and integration testing with other Novell products. The download
file corrects an installation problem in which the complete set
of SMS components fails to copy to the server. In some cases,
this may cause backup products to become unstable. Look for the
file nw5sp2a.exe on the Novell Technical Support Web site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm

*7. YAHOO! E-MAIL PROBLEM

Are you using Yahoo! for your Internet e-mail? If so, you may
experience a problem that causes an Attempt To Load (URL) Failed
error message. This is a known problem for Macintosh folks who
are using Internet Explorer with Yahoo! Mail. Deleting your
browser's cookie files will often solve the problem. Here's how:

First, make sure you exit your Yahoo! Mail account and close
Internet Explorer completely. Some Web browsers have their own
specific steps for deleting cookies. For instance, with Internet
Explorer versions 4 and higher on the Macintosh, you can delete
the cookie files via the Cookies panel in Internet Preferences.
For browsers that don't have specific steps, these general
instructions should help:

First, find the cookie files. To do so, use your operating
system's Find or Search feature to search for the word

cookies

This should bring up a list containing each folder and file whose
name contains the word cookies.

Next, identify the Internet and/or Yahoo! cookie files. It's
important to differentiate Internet cookie files from other files
with the word cookies in their file names. Internet cookie files
are usually located within your browser's directory on your
hard drive.

Finally, delete the Internet cookie files. Warning: DO NOT delete
any file that you believe you may have created yourself or that
you suspect might not be an Internet cookie file.

Note: If deleting the cookie files doesn't solve the problem, the
easiest solution is to try another browser. As a last resort, you
can download a new browser from the Web-which may take awhile,
depending on your modem's speed.

*8. IIS DOUBLE-BYTE CODE PAGE VULNERABILITY

If you're running Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS)
version 3.0 or 4.0 on a computer that has the default language
set to Chinese (Simplified or Traditional), Korean, or Japanese,
you need to be aware of a known problem identified by Microsoft.
This problem occurs on some localized versions of IIS, including
Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean IIS
4.0. The problem can occur on any language version of IIS 3.0 and
4.0 (including the English version) if a double-byte code page or
double-byte character set (such as Japanese, Korean, Simplified
Chinese, or Traditional Chinese) language pack is installed on
the computer and is configured as the default locale in the
Regional Settings of Control Panel.

Microsoft recently released a patch that eliminates this problem.
You can download the patch file from

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/iis/iis-public/
fixes/jpn/security/fesrc-fix/

*9. NWPA.NLM AND CDROM.NLM UPDATES

To add support for SFT3, Novell recently released an update to
the NWPA (NetWare Peripheral Architecture) files, including the
latest HAMs, CDMs, and CDROM.NLM for versions 3.12, 3.2, and
4.x. The NWPA.NLM, NWPAIO.NLM, NWPAMS.NLM, NBI.NLM, and
CDROM.NLM files are the same revisions as those offered in
Support Pack 6a for NetWare 4.11. The HAMs and CDMs included in
this download are the latest certified and release versions
available at this time.

The download kit allows 4.10 and 3.x customers to take advantage
of the NWPA architecture. The update fixes a host of known
problems, including changes made to front-end the NEB calls for
NWPAMS and NWPAIO (the APIs are just stubbed in the SFT3 modules
because NEB is not supported in SFT3--allowing drivers to load).
Novell also modified the command-line parser to allow more than
256 characters in the command-line string. You can download this
update file--nwpaup1a.exe--from the Novell Technical Support Web
site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm

*10. CLIB UPDATE FOR NETWARE 3.12 AND 3.2

Here's another Year 2000 (Y2K) patch from Novell. The file
contains the latest version of CLIB for NetWare 3.12 and 3.2.
The new release of CLIB.NLM contains two fixes related to Y2K
issues:

- Applications that use the CTIME API return the wrong day of
the week after February 29, 2000.
- Applications using the API STRFTIME with the %D parameter
  return the wrong date.

These problems occur with NLMs developed using ANCII C source
code with the Novell APIs STRFTIME and CTIME. Novell says that
these problems occur only with NetWare 3.12 and 3.2 and have not
been observed in NetWare 4.x or 5.x. You can download the update
file, which is named lib312c.exe, from the Novell Technical
Support Web site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm
