BUG Of The Day Tips #6

*1. NDS UPDATE FOR NETWARE 4.11

If you're planning on mixing NetWare 4.11 and NetWare 5 servers in
the same tree, you need to take an important step to avoid
problems. The older versions of some critical files don't mix
well. To address this potential problem, Novell recently released
update versions of these files, which include ds.nlm 6.02,
dsrepair.nlm 4.62. dsmerge.nlm 1.63, dsmaint.nlm 4.96, ndsmgr.exe
1.25, dsview.nlm 1.05, and rollcall.nlm 4.10. You can download
and apply these files, found in the file dsp411p.exe, on the
Novell Support Web site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm

*2. PHOTOSHOP FIXES FOR WINDOWS

To address a number of problems identified since the last update
to PhotoShop 5, Adobe recently released version 5.0.2. This
update includes a number of fixes, including the following:

- The Type tool now uses correct kerning values when
  autokerning text.
- DCS file output has been modified so spot channels print
  correctly from QuarkXPress.
- Windows NT users without administrator privileges can print
and access color settings without error.
- Image windows no longer jump to the top of the PhotoShop window
when you minimize, then restore PhotoShop.

*3. UPDATE FOR INTERNET EXPLORER WITH ACCESSIBILITY AIDS

Microsoft has consistently included features in its software that
make it easier for anyone to use its products effectively,
regardless of physical ability--and Internet Explorer is no
exception. If you're taking advantage of these features, you
should be aware of a recently released update from Microsoft that
addresses several key performance, stability, and compatibility
issues with accessibility aids. You can get the full details in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q196944. To download this
update, visit the support area of Microsoft's Web Site at

http://support.microsoft.com/support

and search for the Knowledge Base article. It will direct you to
the patch file.

*4. TROUBLESHOOTING SHOCKWAVE FOR WINDOWS

If you're experiencing problems running Shockwave on your Windows
system, Macromedia has a few suggestions. First, in order for
Shockwave to work, you must have the correct version for your
type of browser. For example, 32-bit Netscape must use the 32-bit
version of Shockwave (the 32-bit version of Shockwave will not
work with a 16-bit browser). Many ISPs provide the 16-bit version
of Netscape because it works across the largest number of
platforms. To check the bit depth, in Netscape go to Help, About
Navigator and see if the first item on the left is a Java image
that says "powered by JAVA." If it is, then you have the 32-bit
version of Netscape; if not, you have the 16-bit version.

Also, if you are in Windows 95 or NT and are using Internet
Explorer, make sure you're using the Shockwave Active-X control
and not the Netscape Shockwave Plug-in. The Active-X control
installs automatically when you go to a site. If you got it from
Macromedia's site, the button to download it should have been
AutoInstall Now. If it wasn't, and you downloaded a file you had
to install afterward, you have the Netscape Shockwave plug-in. Go
back to the download center and make sure you have been served
the Active-X control with the AutoInstall button.

*5. NORTON GHOST UPDATE

Norton Ghost is a great utility for duplicating systems. Symantec,
maker of the Ghost product, recently released an upgrade for
Norton Ghost 5.1C. This version includes fixes for Processor
Exception 14 errors, support for drives larger than 8GB, FAT16 to
FAT32 conversion, new multicasting features, updated utilities,
and the latest version of Ghost Walker. You'll find the update
file gup51c.exe on the Symantec Web site at

*16. PROXY SERVER 2.0 COMBINED HOT FIX

Microsoft's Proxy Server 2.0 is one of the best products in its
field. However, even the best is prone to a bug or two. To
address several known issues, Microsoft has released a combined
hot fix package that fixes a number of bugs. The acknowledged
problems include:

- Access control causes reverse proxy to fail.
- Multiple IP addresses cause dynamic packet filter to fail.
- Caching does not work under reverse proxying.
- More than one internal IP with socks enabled causes Dr.
  Watson error.
- Access violation in INETINFO: TerminateExtension.

If you are experiencing any of the problems listed above,
Microsoft recommends you obtain the combined hot fix patch kit
from Microsoft Product Support Services, available from

http://support.microsoft.com

*8. COMPAQ-SYNERGY COMPATIBILITY FIX

Compaq has long been a top choice for running the demanding
AutoCAD software. However, some Compaq workstations may exhibit
problems with GLoria Drivers for Powerdraft for AutoCAD R14.
Specifically, Compaq has indicated that Compaq Professional
Workstations 5100, 6000, AP200, AP400, AP500, or SP700 using the
GLoria-Synergy 3D Graphics Controllers are likely to exhibit
problems. To address these issues, Compaq has released a patch
that adds support for the ELSA GLoria-XL 3D Graphics Controller
and fixes issues with multiprocessor system configuration. You
can download the service pack, SP9696, from the Compaq Support
Web site at

http://www.compaq.com/support/files/allfiles.html

*9. PATCHING ELECTRONIC ARTS' MOTO RACER

If you're a fan of Electronic Arts' Moto Racer, you'll be
interested in a patch that resolves some known performance
problems and fixes a couple of bugs. The patch, version 3.22,
improves performance by using only 3D polygons for the whole
display during the game instead of mixing 3D polygons and 2D
surfaces. This makes the program more compatible with 3D boards
such as Apocalypse 3D and M3D, which deal with 3D only. The
patch also fixes several bugs related to the bike leaning
amplitude, resulting in higher racing performance with a higher
frame rate. You can download this patch from the Electronic Arts
Support Web site at:

ftp://ftp.ea.com/pub/ea/patches/mracer/mr322.zip

*10. VISUAL INTERDEV 6 ENTERPRISE DEVELOPER'S WORKSHOP FIX

If you're using Microsoft Visual InterDev 6 Enterprise
Developer's Workshop to teach yourself Visual InterDev 6, you
may run into a problem when you get to chapter 3. This section
includes sample code for a program called MenuDemo. The book and
the companion CD-ROM include this code, but it references several
files that do not exist on the CD-ROM. They are msmenu.js and
msmenu.css. To resolve this problem, Microsoft Press has created
a replacement self-extracting executable file, which you can
download from
