BUG Of The Day Tips #2

*1. AVOIDING MODEM PROBLEMS WITH MONEY 99

If you use Microsoft Money 99 to manage your personal finances,
you may face an annoying problem when trying to dial out from
within the Money application to connect to your financial
institution's direct financial services provider. The problem
occurs if you have multiple modems installed in your computer or
if you use Direct Cable Connection to connect to another device.
Because Money doesn't store your modem selection, it defaults to
the first modem listed in Windows, thereby selecting the wrong
modem. The workaround is to select the correct modem manually
from the modem list in the Call Your Financial Institution
dialog box before you connect to your financial institution.
It's a hassle, but it does the job.

*2. TAXTOOLS FOR WINDOWS UPDATE

Are you ready to handle the task of preparing your 1998 tax
returns? If you're using TaxTools for Windows, you should make
sure you have the latest update, version 8.090, which includes
several enhancements and fixes for known problems. You can
download the update from

http://www.taxtools.com/fix_ttw.htm

This file updates TaxTools for Windows 8.010 through 8.040 to
version 8.090. (You must have a full version of TaxTools 1998 for
Windows before installing this update.)

*3. MONEY 99 BASIC UPDATE PROBLEM

Microsoft provides continuous updates from the Internet to its
Money 99 Basic customers, including financial headlines, product
updates, and current mortgage and tax rates. Unfortunately,
Microsoft has identified a problem with the software that causes
Money to fail to report that it is updating the "current
mortgage and tax rates from Decision Center" when you click
Update Internet Information.

To resolve this problem, Microsoft provides a patch that
replaces the taxmortg.reg file, available from the Microsoft
download library in a self-extracting file. (Note: This patch
is for Money 99 Basic only--the problem does not occur in Money
99 Financial Suite or Money 99 Personal & Business.) You can
download the patch file at

http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/TaxMortg.exe

*4. VISUAL STUDIO 6.0 SETUP BUG

Having problems installing Visual Studio 6.0 on your Windows NT
workstation? Microsoft has identified a problem you may
experience when you launch the installation of Microsoft Visual
Studio, resulting in an error message such as, "The instruction
at 0x10002BCC referenced memory at 0x10002BCC. The memory could
not be read." The cause of this error may be an exception that a
performance monitor counter triggers. To resolve this, Microsoft
provides the following workaround:

1. Disable all performance counters.
2. Reboot the computer.
3. Restart the Microsoft Visual Studio installation.

*5. UPDATING QUICKBOOKS

The tax-filing deadline is right around the corner, so if you're
handling your books using QuickBooks 6.0 or QuickBooks Pro 6.0,
make sure you have the latest update--release 4. This release
includes several enhancements, along with fixes for some known
problems, including resolution of an application error that
occurs when you try to view a transaction after another user has
edited it, and an application error that you get when you're
working with a To Do Note having more than 256 characters. The
update also provides interaction with TaxLink to TurboTax 98.
You can download the update at the Intuit Web site at

*6. MICROSOFT MESSAGE QUEUE SERVER BUG

Microsoft has identified a problem you may face when you apply
the year 2000 update from the full download version of Windows
NT 4.0 Service Pack 4. The problem results in uninstallation of
Microsoft Message Queue Server from your computer, which means
the loss of all messages on that computer, in addition to the
removal of the computer and its queues from the Message Queue
Information Store (MQIS) database. Unfortunately, reinstalling
Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) won't recover the messages or
redefine the queues previously associated with the computer.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Y2ksetup.exe
file included with the full download version of the Windows NT
4.0 Service Pack 4.

The resolution to this problem isn't a simple one. Microsoft
recommends the following actions. If you applied the full
download version of Service Pack 4, removing your MSMQ, you
should reference the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base for recovery information:

*7. TAX RESEARCH FOR WINDOWS 3.X FIX

Your tax tools and resources must be running 100 percent smoothly
to keep you out of the tax audit office. You should check your
tax preparation software and any other resources you'll use to
prepare your taxes. If you're using TaxTool's Tax Research CD-ROM
under Windows 3.x, you may experience problems with the
Multi-Search feature. Again, this problem affects ONLY Windows
3.x users; Windows 95 and 98 users should not install this fix.
To resolve this problem, you can download the fix from

http://www.taxtools.com/fix_trw.htm

Novell recently released a patch kit for GroupWise 5.5 (English
