BUG Of The Day Tips #1

*1. INDEX SERVER SEARCH RESULTS GLITCH

If you're running Microsoft's Index Server 2.0, you may experience
a problem with searches. When you view the results of a search,
you may notice that the abstract returned for the document
contains client-side JavaScript or VBScript. A bug in the HTML
filter that shipped with Index Server 2.0 causes this problem. To
resolve it, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0.
Service Pack 4 updates the HTML filter Index Server uses so that
it no longer treats client-side scripting as part of the
document abstract.

*2. QUICKEN 98 PROGRAM FIXES

Are you using Quicken 98 to manage your finances? If so, you
should be aware of an update file from Intuit that addresses a
few issues Quicken 98 customers report. The update addresses
problems with capital gains calculation and reporting, includes
improvements to online banking features, and resolves some
performance-related issues. You'll find these fixes and more in
the latest update file, release 3 (R3), which you can download
from the Intuit Web site at

http://www.pcworld.com/r/tw/1%2C2061%2Ctw-bugs1%2C00.html

*3. DELL MONITOR FILES FOR WINDOWS

Dell has identified a problem you may experience when you perform
a fresh install of Windows 95 from CD. You'll have problems
selecting a monitor if the one you have isn't in your system's
list of existing monitors. To resolve this issue, Dell released a
patch file, dellmon.exe, that contains drivers for all currently
shipping Dell monitors in an INF file for use with Windows 95.
You should download and apply this patch before performing the
install. You'll find the patch file on the Dell Web site at

http://support.dell.com/filelib/topten/index.asp

*4. MODIFYING USERS' RIGHTS TO DISPLAY ACCOUNT NAMES

Microsoft has identified a problem you may experience when you
use the User Manager tool on a computer running Windows NT. This
affects Microsoft Windows NT Server, versions 3.51 and 4.0;
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation, versions 3.51 and 4.0;
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server; and Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional. The tool may allow domain users or guest account
users to display the list of user and group accounts. Microsoft
states that the problem occurs because all Windows NT users are
granted the Domain List Accounts right by default, which gives
them the necessary permissions to display user and group account
names. As the domain administrator, you can obtain and use the
listacct.exe tool (call Microsoft technical support) to grant or
deny the right to list domain user accounts.

*5. TCP/IP HANGS WINDOWS NT

If you're running Windows NT Server or NT Workstation, version
3.51 or 4.0, or Windows 95, you may experience a problem caused
by the TCP/IP protocol stack. Microsoft has updated the TCP/IP
protocol stack to correct this problem, which may cause your
system to stop responding if it receives corrupted Internet
Control Message Protocol (ICMP) data-gram fragments from a
client. You can avoid this problem by obtaining and applying the
latest service pack for Windows NT version 4.0. Or you can
download the English version of this post-service pack 3 patch
at the following address:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/NT40/

If you're using Windows NT 3.51, you'll need to apply service
pack 5, then apply the patch file found at the following address:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/NT351/

*6. UPDATED MODULAR CLIB AND DSAPI LIBRARIES

Novell has identified a variety of problems you may face when
using the CLIB and DSAPI libraries. These include holes in the
threads.nlm that could cause an abend, problems when running
GroupWise on an SFT3 system, and some minor Java difficulties. To
resolve these and other known problems, Novell has released new
versions of the modular CLIB and DSAPI libraries for NetWare
4.10, NetWare 4.10 for OS/2, NetWare 4.10 SFT III, IntranetWare,
IntranetWare for Small Business, NetWare 4.11, NetWare 4.11 for
OS/2, NetWare 4.11 SFT III, and NetWare 4.11 SMP. You can
download the file libupi.exe from the Novell Web site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm

*7. DIRECTORY SERVICES UPDATES FOR NETWARE 4.10

If you're running Novell's NetWare 4.10, you'll be interested in
the latest update to Directory Services for version 4.10. To
address problems with NetWare 5 compatibility and a Y2K problem
with DSTRACE, Novell recently released an update file that
contains ds.nlm 5.15, dsrepair.nlm 4.59, dsmaint.nlm 4.96, and
dsmerge.nlm 1.63. Novell strongly recommends that all NetWare
4.10 customers upgrade their NDS files to these new versions.
You can download the patch file ds410n.exe from the Novell Web
site at

http://support.novell.com/misc/patlst.htm

*8. DELL WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR BUG

Dell recently identified a problem you may face when using 3Com
3c900 and 3c905 adapters and Windows 95 on certain Dell systems.
A Windows Protection Error during boot-up of the system manifests
this problem. To resolve it, you can download the patch file
wpefix.exe on the Dell Web site at

http://support.dell.com/filelib/topten/index.asp

*9. 3D HOME ARCHITECT ERROR

Broderbund, maker of 3D Home Architect, has identified a problem
you may experience with the software, causing the following
error message:

"Invalid Page Fault in module 3DHADL32.EXE"

The problem occurs when you try to create an elevation view of
an outside wall from the exterior of the home. To correct this
problem, Broderbund recommends you try one of the following:

     - Use the cross-section tool, which also includes a view of
	the roof.
     - Use the wall elevation tool, but begin dragging the cursor
from the inside of a room to its outside wall.
     - Draw temporary walls around the wall for which you want an
elevation view, making the program believe that the
outside wall is actually an inside wall.
