| DID YOU KNOW? | |||||||||||||||||
| - Pope Urban II was a very inspirational speaker - He was educated at a school associated with the Reims Cathedral - The first preaching of the Crusades was aimed at the French and others were encouraged, except the Spanish - The Spanish were encouraged to fight the Muslims in Spain, not in the Middle East - The Pope's entire speech that was delivered at the Cathedral was actually delivered in French, and depicted the perceptions they had during that time period regarding war and the different races - The battle cry of the Crusders was, "God wills it!" - The Crusaders wore garments that had the cross sewn on them - Though historical paintings depict that the Pope spoke to the assembly inside the Clermont Cathedral, it was actually not finished at the time, and the speech was given outside the Cathedral - Pope Urban II was an oportunist - There was a total of eight Crusades |
