South Dakota Horse Fair
South Dakota Horse Fair was March 31 - April 1! The count had over 8,000 people attending the Horse Fair on Saturday. We had lots of people stop by the booth. Its wonderful to meet all the adults who used to have Appaloosas and just want to talk about them and people who want Appaloosas and would like direction on how to find them. Nicole Rabenberg let us use her gelding RR Solid Gold Cody as our exhibit horse. She rode him in the arena during the breed display. Thanks Nicole! Literature was displayed for the following stallions: Mr. Perpetualism standing at Filzen's Training Stables, Rockin Fool owned by Ted & Betty Johnson of Hope, ND; DB's Post Shannon standing at Double K Stables, Madison, SD; and Mighty Oakie owned by Gene Carr and standing at Filzen Training Stables. We thank these stallion owners for their generous support of the booth. The stall was decorated and staffed by Lori Richards, Stephanie Hein, Ann Hein, Terri McCarty, and Sue Kulp.

National Club Budget Cuts
I found out the National Appaloosa Club has made more budget cuts. The new one is they only send out 20 Appaloosa Journals for promotional activities. I found this out one week prior to the event after ordering the materials back in January. If we wanted more Appaloosa Journals I would need to send them $1 per Journal for postage. At $1 a magazine, our club could print a regional directory with local stallion owners featured. This is something we seriously need to look into for next year. We could do a much better job of promoting the regional Appaloosa if we had literature representing the local stallions and mare owners.

Fifth Annual Prairie Classic
The Fifth Annual Prairie Classic will be June 16-17, 2001 in Huron, SD. So far Terri McCarty has done a wonderful job of soliciting sponsors. This is the club's only fund raiser - if you want to help by sponsoring a class or sweat labor, both will be accepted! We can always use help and it can be for a morning, an afternoon, all day or both days! You can call me at 605-352-5360 or email at sahein@santel if you have any suggestions or questions

Don't forget that your Show Points don't count towards
Year End Awards until your dues are paid.
This is also your official reminder that it's time to pay 2001 dues.

New Arrivals:
Terri McCarty reports the birth of a loudly colored filly out of Nugget's T Rastus and DB Post Shannon. The mare is a Sully's Lancer bred mare. She is going to try to register her as Princess de Lakota.
R-Dream Appaloosas reports several new purchases over the winter. Nicole Rabenburg bought a new gelding (who we used as our exhibit Appaloosa at the Horse Fair) RR Solid Gold Cody. Doug Richards purchased a yearling stallion I'm your Dreamfinder (Dreamfinder x Impress Lee Maid) and Libbey Richards will be showing Bright Rachel.

Signs of Spring:
You have to completely change your clothes when you come in the house from brushing your horse.
Your horse looks awful until you brush him and then you do!
You can see ground.
You can see the fence lines and all the broken wire that needs to be fixed.
The old mare out kicks the younger horses.
You have to sweep the mud out of your tack room.
Daily you sweep the mud out of your tack room.
Its not worth the trouble to wash the saddle blankets.
You actually get to use your saddle blankets.
You leave work early so you can ride before it starts to rain. You have the horse brushed, the dirty saddle blanket on, and are about to get on when it rains.
You don't even think about riding out in the field.
You don't ride through standing water.
Send me your comments!

Thank yous!
To Nicole Rabenberg for letting us use her horse for Horse Fair. I was scheduled to use Steve's horse but we couldn't get the trailer out. (Really!) Nicole did a great job of riding her gelding and Doug did a great job of grooming! (For those who have never been to Horse Fair, we really do have fun!)
To Sue Kulp for all her work with the Tri-Region Appaloosa Horse Club. She has represented POP at these meetings. I know it is a long drive and takes a lot of her time.
To Terri McCarty who really has done an excellent job of getting sponsorships for the show. This really is a thankless job and Terri does it so well!
To Paul Filzen for his support of the SD Horse Fair booth. We really appreciate all the literature he sends us. Hopefully the people who picked it up will call him.
