| Welcome to the Monkeyhouse is a full length
play written by Christopher Sergel. It is based
on a collection of short stories by Kurt Vonnegut
Jr., which is also entitled "Welcome to the Monkeyhouse".
The Poor Theatre Company preformed this play as their debut on August 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2004. The central story in Sergel's play is Who Am I This Time?, an identity story about a small-town theatre company putting on a play. Surrounding this frame- work are three other stories: Harrison Bergeron and The Euphio Question, both satires of the future; and The Kid Nobody Could Handle, a present-day scenario about a high school band teacher and a troubled youth. The play is thus a little like a four ring circus, with Newt, the director, as the ringmaster. In the various rings, we encounter absurd humour, touching pathos, startling reversals and thought-provoking satire. |
