SOLITAIRE

(The idea for this came when I was working a job with very little to do... I spent a lot of time on the internet, bored praying for something to do. I began to wonder what would happen if even the most exciting of jobs could become boring and mundane in the future...)

I sail across the stars on yet another cargo mission
The helm has autopilot and it handles navigation
Every system is redundant, the AI is self aware
And I play another game of solitaire

Tradition says each starship oughta have a human captain
But the corporation claims that doesn't meet the cost projection
I am master of my vessel and nobody seems to care
And I play another game of solitaire

My ship unloads its cargo boxes to the robot porter
New orders sent by subspace uplaod to the main computer
I chug another protien drink and turn my swivel chair
And I play another game of solitaire

Tradition says each starship oughta have a human captain
But the corporation states that we don't meet the new equation
I am master of my vessel and nobody seems to care
And I play another game of solitaire

We would sail the heaven vast
And we'd brave the void unknown
But daring's past and the money follow fast
When the profits tell the heroes where to go

I am loaded and my thrusters send me to my destination
They shorted out the airlock and the pilot seat ejection
I've done this run a thousand times and I'm bored of that sun's glare
And I play another game of solitaire

Tradition says each star ship oughta have a human captain
Our spacer strike's ongoing but they froze negotiation
So I'm kept on though obsolete and I'm welded to my chair
And I play another game of solitaire

I am captain of the cosmos, with no one to lead out there
And I play another game, And I play another game, And I play another game...

Ace to King, Queen to Jack, 10
Light years left to go...
