Flooded Room
August 2-8, 2003

I arrived back here from my nice weekend at home (the one I swam the 5K) and got a nice surprise - mildew in my room.  On August 2, there was a huge T-storm in State College that dropped nearly 4 inches of rain in less than 3 hours.  Apparently, the ground didn't like that, and there was a lot of flooding throughout the area.  One place that was flooded - my bedroom, which happens to be in the lowest floor of our townhouse.  The lowest floor happens to be below ground.

The place completely smelled like crap.  By Monday night I'd moved out of the room completely b/c I couldn't take the smell any more.  To their credit, the place we rent from moved pretty quickly.  They got the carpet out on Tuesday, and new carpet and padding was laid on Saturday once the place had completely dried out.  It's nice having a new carpet, but it WASN'T nice having to move EVERYTHING out of my room into the other room down here, or into the bathroom, and then move back in a few days later.

All in all, it was an inconvenience, but it could've been worse.  Nothing significant was damaged, and I heard of other people living in similar units about a mile from here who had over a foot of water in their basement.  I didn't have any standing water... just a wet and smelly carpet.

My bookcase was temporarily moved into the bathroom, as you can see here.  I know people keep some reading material in the bathroom, but this much is not necessary.

The room after the carpet and all of my stuff, save the wall decorations, have been removed.  They left about 2/3 of the blue padding, probably to save money since at least 20 units were damaged.  But it was still wet, and not drying very fast, so I just chucked it myself.

My makeshift bedroom for 4 nights, complete with mattress on top of the futon.

Home sweet home...
