Influence
As one of the first female singer-songwriters of her time, Joni was always successful in using her voice to express her ideas, opinions, and feelings.  From her many careers, Mitchell was most well known and respected for her work in music.  Because of the longevity of her career, Joni managed to reach many different generations of people.  In the 1960's, her folk music was well known to the hippie generation.  Later on, her more serious jazz and her uplifting pop music allowed her to break into new crowds of listeners.  Many musicians today, such as Madonna, Annie Lennox, Jewel, and Sarah Mclachlan, have sited Joni as a major influence in their own music.  One talented singer, Chantel Kreviazuk, has said about Joni, "She's a complete and utter inspiration, no two way's about it."  Through her influence on today's popular musicians, Joni has reached yet another generation of youth who listen to them.

Joni Mitchell's influence is best shown by the widely known and respect artists who have covered her songs.  Judy Collins, for example, had a large part in launching Joni's career with her recording of "Both Sides Now," an early song written by Mitchell.  Tom Rush also gained Joni success with his recording a song she wrote called "The Circle Game."  Bob Dylan, whom Joni had the chance to tour with, covered her song "Big Yellow Taxi," and the pop artist Prince remade "A Case of You."  All of the respected and well-established artists who covered her songs recognized her incredible ability to write music, and she had influence on many different types of artists.   Her eclectic style and complete individualism have made her in to the cultural icon that she is today.

Fellow musicians are not the only people who were aware of Joni Mitchell's talent in writing, singing, and art.  Critics and her large fan base have won Joni a place on Canada's walk of fame, into which she was inducted in the year 2000.  Even earlier in her career, Mitchell received a Grammy, which is one of the most coveted awards for music in the world.  After her 1989 Grammy win, Joni continued to produce quality, unique music, which has been honored in several television tributes.  Public opinion of Joni is reflected in The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock, which called her "One of the most respected singer/songwriters in rock-also one of it's most daring and uncompromising innovators."  Her talent has been recognized throughout the generations, and continues to surprise her growing number of fans.
