About Us
Why We Named it after Poohka:
Poohka was dropped off at a local pet shop because the owner didn't want him (or 3 other rabbits) anymore and the owner was going to take him to the SPCA if they didn't take them all.  The good-hearted guy at the pet shop didn't want that, so he took him (
Please note that not all pet shops are like this & may use the rabbit as food for a snake!!)
We took him and a pregnant rabbit (Pumpkin) because they seemed least likely to find a home (the other two did find one).  He was named after the invisible white rabbit in the movie Harvey which was a "pooka".  He was with us for 1 1/2 years and would have been longer if not due to what we believed to be an error on his caregivers part (due to certain reasons, we will not get into it any further).
Poohka now lives on in our hearts & in this rescue, as well as in his daughter, Spookie.  He was an unwanted rabbit who found a good, loving home.  That is what Poohka's Rabbit Rescue is about.  By educating the public, preparing them for a rabbit, we are hoping to lessen the amount of rabbits out there.  Many owners are putting rabbits out on the streets, leaving them to fall prey to other animals or the enviroment.  Please don't do this!  Give us a call.
Location:
We are located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.  Phone:  (306)384-7518  Please leave a message!

Service Area:
We are currently only servicing the immediate Saskatoon area (unless you can bring your rabbit here) but that doesn't mean we won't try to help you.  We do accept supplies from Regina, but we currently can't bring down or accept any rabbits from there.  If you are interested with helping with this problem (see volunteers page), it would enable us to service other areas.  We do accept Saskatchewan Recommendations & links.

What Got Us Started:
Many of these rabbits are being put out into the cold.  People think that because the wild ones can care for themselves, so can a rabbit that was a pet.  They don't realize or care that these rabbits were bred as pets, domesticated.  The rabbit is not better off outside than at the SPCA.  Outdoors, your rabbit will have to try to survive against the elements & predators.  Survival is unlikely.  Did you know that wild rabbits have a shorter lifespan due to this exact reason?!?!  We felt the need to start a rescue after Big Boy came into our lives.  We realized there were many more like him and we couldn't keep them all so we thought we would help find homes for them instead.
About the Rescue:
We received our Incorporation status on December 8th, 2004.   Many rabbits are being turned out on the streets, owners without knowledge of where to get help for various rabbit behavioral issues, people afraid to take them in to a shelter.  This is why we are here.  Our goal is to help with some of these problems that cause owners to decide to get rid of that rabbit.  We are here so that people will buy that Easter present with knowledge of rabbits beforehand and that they may stay in good, loving homes.  We hope that by providing information & educating the public on rabbits, we might be able to keep less from being out on the streets & in the shelters.  Many shelters have a difficult time placing rabbits.  Why is this?  Maybe because people see that cute, tiny rabbit & believe that they will stay that tiny or maybe because people don't realize what a wonderful pet a rabbit can really be!  The amount of unwanted rabbits continues to grow, our hope is that by educating beforehand, we will be able to help decrease this number.
