Year 2: 40% Medsoc. 40% Hall. 1% study.

Year 2
By far the most eventful year of medical school for me, all of it non-academic, so be prepared for long stories on this page!! This sounds clichéd, but this was the year of medical school that changed my life the most.

This was the year I stayed in King Edward VII (KE7) hall, and made a whole new bunch of friends like Adrian Loh, Ng Bang Teen, Loh May-Han and Coral Toh, and did so many activites like Hall Play, Fencing, and pull so many pranks and late night suppers that a whole separate section is needed to do it justice. ->

It's not the place that matters, it's the PEOPLE :)
Redang - We shoulda gone diving instead :P
It was leaky! It wasn't our fault!

On impulse, I also joined MedSoc as treasurer, which taught me both the folly of being impulsive and the rewards of taking the path untravelled.
We did many things, but some tiny events stand out:
  • How we spent the night in the freezing cold Medsoc room on Feburary 13th, our hands frozen stiff and bleeding from scratches, as we wrapped roses for Valentine's Day.
  • Oh, and Rag day, where after having stayed awake the whole of mounting night, I went back up and slept through the entire float parade.
  • And Medic Week, where we were skirting regulations left right and centre, finding out so many things for the first time, not realizing how deep we had gotten into until it was too late. Where 2 hours before the cycle-thon, we were using lock-cutters to "liberate" bicycles for our use.

  • Pulau Redang

Medsoc organized many events that year, whose pictures you can see on this and the next page. Actually, most of the time, it just looked like M2s (who made up most of medsoc) organizing events for M2s (who were the only ones free to turn up).
There was regular charity work, improvements to Medsoc room, the good ol' carrom boards, as well as holidays to Johor and even Pulau Redang where many learnt Scuba Diving and Canoeing. Arif founded the website, while Milo organized water-skiing, ice-skating, cycling and many other sports, and Wee Song revived the MUNUS games with the medics from Malaysia Uni. The traditional Medic Play got off to a rocky start over the venue, but was a roaring success. Christmas Bash was another happening event under Meifang, and so was the dinner and dance.
The major event of the year was the greatly expanded Medic Week, where we almost bit off more than we could chew. The charity drive, jog/cycle-a-thon (with Dr. William Tan), Tomb with a View play, and Bazaar would have overhelmed us had it not been for Adrian Tan's leadership and the wholehearted support of the year 1s and 2s. We saw such support once again when the time came for Rag and Flag, and we took home the vice-chancellor's shield.
