Patio Musings

Being a woman of a 'certain age' and having no great ambitions to leave a mark on history, I find that I can pass countless hours on my patio doing absolutely nothing!

I can huddle outdoors in cool weather early in the morning wrapped in flannel and more flannel. Early bird visitors bring a big smile. When my downy woodpecker visits, all is well with my world. Knowing I'm providing him with something he enjoys brings me great pleasure.

Before the ground warms up in the spring, I contemplate the mulch and imagine the beauty to come in the following weeks and months. (I block out thoughts of the inevitable weeds.)

When the sprinkler system gets turned on in May, I delight in watching and listening to falling water. If my dog happens to be in the yard, she has to calculate when it is safe to run between two different, overlapping sprays as they oscillate! The mist cycle has been known to create a rainbow!

In June, I watch the fluffies from a nearby cottonwood tree float lazily by on a gentle breeze and they remind me of faraway galaxies in the night sky. The lightning bugs that arrive in June turn a summer night into a twinkling fairyland and remind me days long gone when a partner and I would dance under artificial stars at the Indiana Roof. No, I dont want to be a college student again. My dancing days are over.

Of course, I watch the golfers close by. Macho people (well, men) taking 5 practice swings and then topping their ball! But I also watch families teaching their youngsters to play golf and that is pleasing to me.

I watch contrails during the day and the twinkling lights at night of airplanes heading to and from Chicago. I wonder who the people are and why they are in planes. I used to make a wish upon the first star. Then I moved on to telling planes "Wait for me!" Now, I just hope the passengers had a good flight and that their baggage arrives with them.

As the shadows lengthen on the golf course, followed by dusk steathifully creeping upon my world, I thank the Lord for a contented day surrounded by His beauty, and if I have no tomorrow in this great scheme of things, then, by golly!, Ive had a GREAT day!
