As a youngster, my mother made me look her straight in the eyes when I was telling a 'story.' When my eyes wavered, she knew full well that I was lying! Oh, how I wish the chat room was camera-equipped.
As a child, I grew up in the certain knowledge that those white lines on my fingernails were the evidence of a lie having been told. No wonder I wasn't allowed to wear fingernail polish!
Now 'white lies' were good lies. Those were the lies that made people feel good about themselves. We liars enjoyed telling them because we knew we were lying. Today, however, I feel that a white lie told to me is just the truth in disguise.
A fib is a gentle lie and should not be confused with a half- truth. Fibs are simply fudging on the truth a little bit. A half-truth is a sin of omission. What you told was the truth, but you left out the part that could get you in trouble. Deep trouble, like deep do-do, is to be avoided at all costs.
Deception is the worst form of lying. Lies are usually spontaneous, but deception takes planning. The plotting is fun, the execution often pleasurable. Practical jokes fall into this category and are not to be considered unmannerly
This is my 'take' on lying. I lie a lot and that's the truth. Have I ever lied to you?.
