BLIND DATES

Remember those "blind dates" from years long passed? Palpatating heart, sweaty palms, and the need to frequent the bathroom as the appointed hour approached? Disappointment or exhaltation when you finally met your partner for the evening? Ah, those were the salad years, weren't they?

I recently was a 'little mouse' and had the good fortune to witness a blind date take place. I was right beside an older woman and her daughter as they awaited the arrival of a gentleman whom they had never met in person. Apparently, thorough plans had been made in advance because the women were watching for a tall gentleman wearing a red down jacket.

The daughter rolled her eyes to heaven when the first red jacket appeared. The bald head with the shoulder-length fringe of limp hair must surely have convinced her that her mother had completely lost her senses! The mother reassured her that the man in question was assuredly not George.

After a bit of time had passed, the daughter, not trusting her mother, went to Plan B and checked out the back-up meeting place. She returned with a smile. The aged hippy was not there!

I watched that pair closely. When the mother began to smile and the grin grew bigger and her eyes began to sparkle, I looked the same direction as she. A tall, distinguished-looking gentleman wearing a red down jacket was advancing toward them. He had a matching grin on his face. Surely, this must be George!

Oblivious to the people surging around them, George and the mother embraced and exchanged a prolonged kiss. Passers-by smiled and detoured around the couple.

"Kissing cousins?" I think not.
