I recently had an occasion to visit a busy metropolitan airport and I am happy to inform you that internal security and the National Guard are indeed providing protection that is exceptional.
One of the more arduous guard duties required two men to assure that no departing passenger suddenly reversed himself , dashed one-quarter of a mile, planted a bomb in a smelly untidy plane, and waited around for heaven.
Because these men were stationed well inside the terminal and well away from where the food court had been closed off from all but ticketed passengers, the National Guard provided food service to those security personnel. I can assure you that the only Guardsmen/women that I saw never once took their eyes off the cups of coffee and bags of sandwiches from McDonalds that they delivered. There would be no contamination of food stuffs on their watch!
The front line of national defense was, however, maintained at the entrance to the terminal from the multi-storied parking garage. The 17-year old guard in his black sweat suit and orange cotton vest with the word "Security" boldly printed on the back inspired great confidence. His only crime-fighting equipment was a bicycle. It must have been a racing bike because it had tiny tires. All the better to catch fleeing criminals! From time to time, this guard nudged open the automatic doors , took his bike inside, and by climbing aboard and leaning against a wall was able to rest his eyes. Guard duty is indeed tiring.
Fly the friendly skies, folks. You are in good hands
